Small But Secure/ Our World

Creemore jail built in 1892

This is Creemore, Ontario, a village that claims to have North America's smallest jail - 15 by 20 feet. (FYI: There are three other towns in Ontario that make the same  claim: Rodney, Coboconk and Tweed.)

I did go inside (my choice) and the accommodations are sparse - three small cells each with a bed,  a blanket and a chamber pot. A wood burning stove in a narrow hallway in front of the cells provides the only heat. Brrr.

    I suppose the stonework is so people can’t break through easily… but it is lovely to the modern eye. Imagine competing to have the smallest jail. In my area we have a community hall that is said to have been built around the smallest post office. Seems like tiny things are noteworthy and really cool. :)

    back then a really small jail, now we have cells the size of this little beauty and millions of them. i love it, thanks for sharing.

    Lots of old jails in my area have also been preserved. I guess we have a certain fascination with lockup history!

    It's funny how the jails backed then had such "security". I bet my boys would be out of there within minutes;) Me on the other hand? I would hyperventilate:)

    Funny! Thought you might have been downtown Toronto for a moment. I've seen some homes with barred windows. Must be sad to live there.

    With 3 cells my best guess would be each cell is about 10x7. No thanks. I'll be good.

    At least it has a window to look out on the lovely landscape. It just looks too pretty to be a jail.

    Where are the shots of the inside? Surely you got some while you were in there....I mean visiting. :) At first glance I would never have guessed it to be a jail.

    What an old prison - or jail, as you say.. A little spooky when I see the window.. But I liked the door.. on second hand.. I'm not sure anymore, if I would step right in.... :))

    It certainly looks great from the outside, but I was staggered to read it contained more than one cell!! Yikes - is that a sense of claustrophobia I feel coming on ??! Thanks for sharing EG

    I would be sure I minded my ways up in them thar parts as I sure as heck wouldn't want to end up in that little jail!

    I thought, what with the bars on the windows, it was a house in south Miami! :-)

    Those are very lovely photos, and concrete representation of the story. I thought that jail is just a stone house without the label. I also posted a small stone house maybe the same size as that, but it was really meant as a house, not a jail. LOL.

    It's a minor miracle I've never seen the inside of a jail. Knock on wood. LOL! Wish all jails were this small. But all our windows here do have bars... hmmm... Nice shots, EG.

    That jail door I posted a while back was on a pretty small jail, certainly no bigger than this, but yours is much more attractive.

    That would be a deterrent to crime, especially in winter. But I bet it can get pretty hot inside in summer with so little window space. - Margy
