Iron Horse/ Theme Day
This one-of-kind iron, seven-and-a-half-foot-high sculpture was created by a local blacksmith/artist. The sculpture, mounted on railway ties because railway engines are sometimes referred to as iron horses, now stands in front of the Mount Albert Public School, celebrating the reason why Mount Albert, first settled around 1800, is still a thriving community today.
A century ago, Mount Albert was a major railway junction of three lines. Other communities that were settled at about the same time as Mt. Albert began to lose their population when the tracks skirted around their homes and businesses and stopped instead at stations in Mount Albert and Brown Hill.
Each class at the school gets to create a time capsule of artwork, which is placed in a box on the horse's side. (You can see four boxes on this side.) When the students reach grade 8, they get to open their box and look through their time capsule.
Community contributions were also placed in the sculpture. Their box will be opened in 2050. Hmmm. I wonder what they put in there!
