Back in Session/ Sepia Scenes

Those were the days!

Kids in East Gwillimbury started the 2009-10 school year on Tuesday, September 8. Many parents are heaving HUGE sighs of relief.

I took this photo at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum in Vandorf, Ontario. The low light contributes to the grainy, old photo appearance.

Hasn't school changed for the better since the days depicted here? Those seats look very uncomfortable to me. No wonder boys invented spitballs!

  1. Love it! I have two of those really old school desks. The metal on mine isn't quite as ornate as these but they are still great.

  2. Our school started yesterday, too. Two of our three darlings boarded the yellow school bus. Photo to come on Friday! I thought GIRLS created spitballs?

  3. Absolutely love this photo. The sepia tone gives it such a warm quality and an 'old' feel to it. Just perfect!

  4. This is a wonderful photo - and the "quaint" school room is a perfect sepia subject.

P.S. No, Ralph doesn't have a water view from his office. It's about a half-mile or so from the beach.

I am so happy to get my Internet back ;-)

    Thanks for visiting me!

  6. Great shot. I think when I first started school we had desks like that.
They even had the ink well hole in them. It was an old school long, long ago. LOL MB

  8. Yes, boys created spitballs. Girls, however, created pigtails so the boys could dunk them in the inkwells.

The girls then created loud screams that got the teacher's attention and the teacher created a paddle for the boy's backsides.

After that, the boys threw their spitballs at the girls, who went "Ewww," and then ran and hid enticing the boys to chase them.

And the boys have been chasing them ever since.

It's been a lot of fun.

  13. Oh I love seeing those old school desks. We had some that looked VERY similar to those. I even remember how my old grade school (elementary) SMELLED... They put oil in the floors I think--because the school always had a peculiar smell. Funny--the things we remember...

    Thanks for the memories.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  17. The classic look of a classroom, no computers (that we can see), nor a fancy interactive whiteboard instead of the classic blackboard.

The lesson plans are clear, and there is no excuse for forgetting the assignments, they are clearly marked. I am intrigued by the Union Jack up front - I assume the Maple Leaf flies nearby as well...

  20. This is a wonderful sepia picture. My elementary school had desks very similar to the ones in your picture. They weren't comfortable, but I never tried spitballs as a release mechanism!
