Horse Chestnut Tree/ Today's Flowers

Horse Chestnut blossoms (Aesculus hippocastanum)

Last week the local horse chestnut blossoms were spectacular! Unfortunately, four days of high heat did them in for this year.

Squirrels love the nuts, sometimes known as conkers. However they are non-edible for humans.

Unfortunately it was a windy day, so the blossoms are not as clear as I would like. When I went back to take a better shot, the blossoms had faded with the heat!

    So many beautiful blossoms are so short-lived. Here's a silly question: Do horses eat the nuts?

    My first time to see these blossoms. It is always a learning experience in Today's Flowers.

    Sometimes, nature is harsh, but we get to enjoy even short lived.

    Aren't they such lovely flowers. There are some red flowered ones out here too. We used to love to collect the shiny nuts in the fall. I don't know why---maybe to throw at each other. MB

    I don't think I have ever seen these...what beauties they are! Too bad the heat couldn't have waited a little longer to arrive. Very nice captures of such a lovely blossom.

    I have 2 horse chestnut trees beside my house but very few flowers on them this spring. I suppose that the Stouffville squirrels will have to go to EG to get their conker supplies in the fall.

    You really do a fine job of capturing floral images!

    This would make a nice subject for a watercolor painting.

    These blossoms are beautiful. It really is a shame that some of the prettiest blossoms are also the shortest-lived.
