Horse Chestnut blossoms (Aesculus hippocastanum)
Last week the local horse chestnut blossoms were spectacular! Unfortunately, four days of high heat did them in for this year.
Squirrels love the nuts, sometimes known as conkers. However they are non-edible for humans.
A closer view of the blossoms
Unfortunately it was a windy day, so the blossoms are not as clear as I would like. When I went back to take a better shot, the blossoms had faded with the heat!

Love these. What an intriguing blossom - thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I'll have time to post flowers today...we are going on a family trip soon.
So many beautiful blossoms are so short-lived. Here's a silly question: Do horses eat the nuts?
ReplyDeleteAnother on my Never Seen list.
ReplyDeleteThe horse chestnut flowers are so beautiful. To bad they were so brief.
ReplyDeleteMy childhood home had such a tree next door. BRings back memories, thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy first time to see these blossoms. It is always a learning experience in Today's Flowers.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, nature is harsh, but we get to enjoy even short lived.
Enjoy your week!
Aren't they such lovely flowers. There are some red flowered ones out here too. We used to love to collect the shiny nuts in the fall. I don't know why---maybe to throw at each other. MB
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever seen these...what beauties they are! Too bad the heat couldn't have waited a little longer to arrive. Very nice captures of such a lovely blossom.
ReplyDeletebeautiful blossoms, and I love the color on the closeup.
ReplyDeleteAmazing tree flower.
ReplyDeleteLovely flowers. My first time to see horse Chestnut Tree. Thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteI have 2 horse chestnut trees beside my house but very few flowers on them this spring. I suppose that the Stouffville squirrels will have to go to EG to get their conker supplies in the fall.
ReplyDeleteEG: Very cool photo, quite similar to my Ohio Buckeye Tree.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a horse chestnut bloom. These are gorgeous!
ReplyDeletePretty! I've never seen such beauty here before.
ReplyDeleteThe first shot so superbly captures the character and beauty of the candles on the Hippocastanus
ReplyDeleteIsn't nature great? I love the variety of flowers you manage to find and photo.
ReplyDeleteDarla
I guess they are spectacular! I can just imagine how it must look to see them all in bloom at once!! ~karen
ReplyDeleteYou really do a fine job of capturing floral images!
ReplyDeleteThis would make a nice subject for a watercolor painting.
Such pretty blossoms, EG. I"ve never seen anything quite like them.
ReplyDeleteHorse chestnuts? Hmm...bery beautiful flowers, though.
ReplyDeleteThese blossoms are beautiful. It really is a shame that some of the prettiest blossoms are also the shortest-lived.
