Erie Canal, Bushnell's Basin, New York - looking westerly
Last Friday was a blustery, overcast day in Upstate New York where my husband and I visited relatives for the U.S. Thanksgiving. Out sightseeing (in spite of the weather) we crossed the Erie Canal.
Remember this song?

The canal was completed in 1825, linking Buffalo to Albany and then on to New York City via the Hudson River.

The canal was built in sections and for a while Bushnell's Basin was a terminus for all canal traffic going either east or west, which meant warehouse workers, boat handlers, tavern keepers, and wagon drivers were kept busy here for years. Superhighways built in the 1960s have made the canal commercially unimportant.

Once canals were the highways of the world, then railroads and now we have modern highways. Unfortunately, trucks are far less efficient than the other two modes of transportation.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it really looks deserted and devoid of life, even if it is still teaming with it. Only the water seems to be moving. In winter, does the water become ice too. By then Erie becomes Eerie maybe! hehe.

It must have been a very important piece of work to dig this canal. In our flat country it is already a great achievement to dig canals, let alone in your rocky country. And the distance is much further than that of the Netherlands from north to south, which measures approximately 310 kms.
