White-winged Scoter/ Camera Critters

White-winged scoter, Hamilton, Ontario

Sometimes I'm in the right place at the right time AND I have my camera.  This was one of those times. I was trying to get some good photos of long-tailed ducks that were swimming from Lake Ontario into Hamilton Harbour when this male white-winged scoter swam close to me.

He was more hungry (I think) than worried about me, who was standing very still like a statue.

And he found something too! YUM!

To join in the fun, visit Misty Dawn at CAMERA CRITTERS.

  2. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck ... you know the rest. I guess it must be a duck. A variety I've never seen in the waterways around here so I find him most interesting. Nice series of photos.

  3. Serendipity! Great captures! I've not heard of scoters. I've heard of scooters, and I think they're just ducky, but they're not the same thing...right?

Look at this guy's eye! Looks madder than the Mad Hatter!

  13. Very good. I don't think I've seen one before, though I keep hearing about the various ducks we have here, mostly all I ever see are mallards and long-tails.
