Attitude/Camera Critters

Watching me watching him

Last weekend, this guy had attitude! He spent much of the day attacking the male cardinal reflected in the chrome on my brother-in-law's truck. He never caught on that he was attacking his own reflection.

I tried to get a photo of him pecking the chrome, but he flew away every time I pointed my camera at him, so I guess he was more afraid of me than the "other cardinal."

  1. I've never seen a Cardinal in RL. It must have been fun watching him spar with his own reflection.

  2. What a gorgeous outfit! This guy knows how to dress ;-)

  3. Yesterday, the cat saw herself in a mirror and was ready to attack. I think it is so funny how animals don't realize they are attacking themselves.

  4. Hee! There's a reason we have the expression "bird brain". ;)

  14. Hehe.. we had a bird who kept returning to scream and flap his wings ferociously at his own reflection in the front windshield of our car. I tried, and failed, to capture it on video. You, however, did get a gorgeous shot of him, CameraGirl.

  16. They are jumpy birds. A little surprised to read he never figured out he was pecking his reflection. I thought they might be one of the smarter birds.

  19. Some male birds can be so territorial! We had a cardinal a couple of years back that found the car mirrors. He made a terrible mess on the car. We put plastic grocery bags on the mirrors until the nesting season was over. That worked well except when we forgot to put them on; then he was back at it fighting his reflection.

  20. Gorgeous photo. One year we had one attacking himself in the dining room window ... thought he was attacking a rival after his lady friend.

  21. Great shot of the man with the attitude. It's funny to me that he was attacking his reflection as I've had male cardinals do that here too.

  22. LOL...I saw the same thing happened too. But he is beautiful!

  23. There is a female cardinal here that keeps pecking at the window in a guest room. I can't figure out why she does it. Maybe she sees her reflection?

  24. Lovely shot. We don't have those here. At least I have not seen them around these parts.

  25. A beauty! As Stephanie said, we don't have them here. More's the pity.

  26. What a bright lad - in colour at least!

  27. Nice bright plumage. Looks like your trees are still in bud. Our just burst out in leaf this week. One morning they were buds, the next day it seemed they were in light green leaves. An amazing transformation. - Margy

  28. We have a robin with that same attitude. Unfortunately we don't have any pictures. Your picture of the cardinal is wonderful.

  29. Funny. Cardinals have to be careful as to what they see - it may not be what they think they see.

Beautiful shot! We had a lot of cardinals at our old house in Ocala; but don't see any here.

  31. Most animals identify each other by scent, but birds have a poor sense of smell so they are more visual ... that is why he (and if she were there she would do the same thing) attacks the reflection. Most Dogs and cats may be curious but they are not concerned by their reflection because there is no scent. Great picture of a beautiful bird. And,I liked your forest floor flowers too ... our Trillium is about to bloom in the wooded area near us. Love your blog ...
