Viewing deck on third floor of lighthouse
For more than a century, the Cabot Head lighthouse guided ships away from the treacherous shore of the Bruce Peninsula, the land that juts into Lake Huron nearly separating Georgian Bay from the rest of the lake.
Lighthouse, Cabot Head, Ontario
The lighthouse is situated on a cliff and, as you may have guessed, located in an area named for explorer John Cabot.
Another view
A kerosene lantern with several parabolic reflectors was placed at the top of square tower, which rises 80 feet above water level. In good weather, the light could be seen for 16 miles.
Old electric light
Eventually, electricity replaced kerosene. And later the lighthouse was replaced by...
Lighthouse substitute
a stand alone automated tower. Today the lighthouse is a museum.

Old things are nice. Look at me. I will be 78 on October 25th and my wife will be 76 on October the 27th. There is two things that are not supposed to work in any marriage. 1. Never marry a person born in the same month and 2. Never marry a person who doesn't like you. She didn't like me. I liked her. So far, we have been married for 56 years and soon it will be 57 years. Something old. Something new. Had five kids. Four are in the 50s. Our baby is 40.
ReplyDeleteYou answered my question as I was wondering what the lighthouse now was, it would make a lovely home.
ReplyDeleteI visit lighthouses whenever I find one. They are historical places that once did essential work, and I am so pleased that many communities acknowledge this past by providing museums on the property.
ReplyDeleteI love lighthouses, and have always wanted to live in one. That was in my younger years. Now I'm not so sure especially in winter. Anyway it's so good someone preserves these old beauties.
ReplyDeletei know they do the same thing, but i much prefer the old lighthouse over the new one. glad they preserved it. so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear they saved the old lighthouse to be used as a museum.
ReplyDeleteThe new tower is, ummm, ugly.

These are great photos! I love old lighthouses and I'm so glad they kept this and made it into a museum!
ReplyDeleteI had always imagined lighthouses like towers. This is the first one I see integrated into a house. Nice post.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting light you've captured here.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing lighthouses and this is one I would love to have seen.
ReplyDeleteI just love lighthouses! I've always wanted to live in one. Love your photos!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe lighthouse is so charming. I love the different colors in the first shot. Interesting piece of history.
ReplyDeleteI'm always enchanted by lighthouses, this one is very lovely!
ReplyDeleteLéia
The old lighthouses are so unique---Too bad the modern replacements have no charm. Living on the coast there are many lighthouses here in Washington---all cool and most replaced and now are museums or interpretive centers.
ReplyDeleteLove the Claytonia.
Yes the new one is ugly. but at least they didn't tear down the old!
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that things from the past always seem to be filled with so much more character? I love the look of the lighthouse building and glad it was maintained as a museum. Maybe one day far into the future people will look at the newer metal structure and marvel at how it looks like something from outer space. Not sure if it will ever have museum potential … but maybe an outdoor modern work of art?
ReplyDeleteyeah, that new tower has zero charm, whereas the old one has it all!
ReplyDeleteThis is the loveliest lighhouse i've ever seen! and I've seen a lot..
ReplyDeleteThere is something so terribly, terribly sad about the new one. The lack of soul is such a huge contrast to the obvious love in the old one. Great shots, super history.
ReplyDeleteLighthouses can certainly be fascinating! Love that you've taken us on the tour of this one.
ReplyDeleteI once spent a whole week in a working lighthouse. It was a fantastic experience on the rugged Atlantic coast of Scotland. That little window in the top shot would do me perfectly well thanks very much!
ReplyDeleteGreat post EG! I am so glad they kept the old one. I have never been up there.
ReplyDeleteI like the colors and the geometry of the first photos and the strange shape of the light,,,
ReplyDeleteFantastic lighthouse!
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful lighthouse. i particularly like the contrasting coloured brickwork
ReplyDeleteI love lighthouses. So happy that this one still stands as a museum ... it is much more romantic than its modern replacement!!
ReplyDeleteGreat lighthouse!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River.
ReplyDeleteI love lighthouses, and yours is a beauty! The red trimmings just set it off nicely.
ReplyDeleteI love the old lighthouses! The new substitute just doesn't replace the lovely old lighthouses. Beautiful photos, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm a lighthouse lover, too! And this one is terrific -- the new one, like most "new" things today may serve its purpose, but as for looks???? I don't think so! Great post and photos as always! Hope you have a great week!

The replacement is so boring ... people have lost interest in design and beauty ... all they want is functionality. I like the old way much better. I am drawn to old light houses , old homes and buildings because there was such pride in the work they put into them. Love your picture and would love to come visit your world.

Such an unusual lighthouse -- not the typical style. Love the history you provided. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful. Must have been interesting to live there in the older days.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear that they kept the original lighthouse for visitors. I agree with one poster that it an unusual looking one. I really dislike the replacement one. Nice shots!
ReplyDeleteThe lighthouse substitute just doesn't have the charm.
ReplyDeleteThe automated tower may be more efficient, but it definitely lacks the character and charm of the old lighthouse.
ReplyDeleteThe original lighthouse is wonderful, too bad that most of these beauties have been replaced. Progress? ... I think not.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely lighthouse.
ReplyDeleteIt is too bad there aren't as many lighthouses as there are barns...I surely do love them.
