B/Alphabe-Thursday

 Eastern black swallowtail

B is for BUTTERFLIES

So far it has been a fantastic year for photographing butterflies in Ontario. Butterflies are abundant and everywhere - at least everywhere I go.

I suspect the black swallowtail above was laying eggs - or thinking about laying eggs - on the  leaves of the Queen Anne's lace it is sitting on, as Queen Anne's lace is a member of the carrot family and a favourite food of black swallowtail caterpillars.

Comma butterfly

The comma is happy in the land of dandelions because it's fond of that plant's nectar.

Red admiral

Red admirals are also fans of  dandelion nectar,

  3. Nice photos. We have lots of butterflies here this summer too. I've enjoyed photographing them on our Indian spice trees (also known as lavender Vitex). We have some black swallowtails but mainly yellow ones and an occasional zebra.

  10. Beautiful photos. We have seen butterflies in our yard which amazes us. Me--we don't have flowers. The kids--they are mesmerized by how the butterflies look different when their wings open and close.

  22. Well, I'm impressed. I don't think I've ever gotten such nice flutterby shots! So what's going on in Ontario - why so many? Maybe they're happy 'cause so many Ontarions are in Florida! :-)

Re one of your comments: I accidentally deleted, but was able to copy and paste it.

  26. Beautiful butterflies! They're hard to capture since I find they like to flit about a bit... It's our dogs' favorite pastime - chasing butterflies and butterfly shadows! :)

  34. Pretty Butterflies, Ms. E.G. I heard just this week that if a butterfly lands on you then you will have good luck should make a wish right away.
