Wilson's snipe, Carden Alvar, Ontario
Is it listening?
Yep, it heard my camera click
This snipe would be well camouflaged if it were standing in a field, but
as you can see it was feeling bold standing on a fence post, apparently
something they are well known for.
Can you hear it saying wheat wheat wheat? If it were flying overhead you might hear an eerie woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo. It's breading season and apparently there's a lot to talk about.
Notice its long beak, short neck and short legs. With it's long bill
it probes for insects and worms in wet meadows and fields, as well as
along the edges of streams and ditches.
Yep, it heard my camera click
I am linking yo World Bird Wednesday.
These are SUPER!!
ReplyDeleteLovely photos, haven't seen a snipe yet.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing shot you got! So crisp and clear, I'm really impressed. And he certainly heard you clicking away, but that's a good thing. That let you get his good side. :)
ReplyDeleteThe last photo with the alert bird in profile is wonderful.
ReplyDeletelooks like a distant relative of our willets at the beach.
ReplyDeleteI always wondered what a snipe looked like. Now, thanks to your excellent pictures, I know. Cute!

Fantastic photos ~ absolutely wonderful ~ ^_^ (A Creative Harbor)
ReplyDeleteGreat shots!! We used to have snipe here, but I haven't heard any in a couple of years. Maybe getting too built up...
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are so nice with the green background. It perfectly coordinates with the green-tinged moss on the post.
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are great. They should be in a bird identification book! They are much better than the ones in the book I have.
ReplyDeleteNice catch! My camera has a "click" that's loud enough that I get a frame off and the bird is gone, sigh!
ReplyDeletelove that look over his shoulder. :)
ReplyDeleteADorable little friend and the portraits are great!
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed, you know a lot about birds!

Great shots of this bird. I'm not familiar with the Wilson Snipe. I love seeing pictures of birds and learning more about them.

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely bird.
This is a snipe? Holy cow! Some friends took me snipe hunting a long time ago and I never did find any snipes. Didn't find anything else, either. Not even my "friends." :-)
ReplyDeleteI learned something new today. Thank you! Love the clarity of your shots.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these photos of the snipe. That long beak is very impressive.
