Standing behind the "castle" walls
The remains of a legendary White Lady's Castle - a.k.a. the 3 Lakes Pavillion - sits atop a grassy knoll across the road from a sandy beach in Rochester, New York. It's said that every year, a ghostly lady in white is sighted there. The facts are sketchy as to the apparition's identity, but some local residents - especially teens and young adults - have been known to search for the White Lady.
How do I know this? The fellow you see behind the wall told me. He also told me the wall is what's left of a grand castle...
As seen from the road
but then he hastily added - sensing my disbelief - this wall was actually a lookout point built in 1911 for a picnic pavilion that stood behind it.
Behind the wall now
The pavilion is long gone. It fell into disrepair during the Great Depression.

Ah, ghosts and mystery! They both add a certain something to old (or oldish!) bricks and mortar!

a beautiful wall it is and i can't help thinking how much work was involved with building it with all those rocks.
ReplyDelete"sensing my belief"... I'm going to choose to go with the castle and ghost theory.

That's a beautiful wall regardless of its purpose!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly looks like a castle wall. And as for the ghost she can clearly be seen riding a bicycle in your second photo.
ReplyDeleteThe wall is a beautiful addition to the landscape and the story was fun too!
ReplyDeleteThe older stone gets the more beautiful and mysterious it looks. I enjoyed this tale and how it crept over time like vines around this intriguing barrier. :)
ReplyDeleteThat stone wall is wonderful!Beautiful pictures and special place!

I love that amazing stone wall and the playful mingling of the castle/ghost story with the actuality...I'll just squint and pretend it's really a castle... :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad something was saved, that is a magnificent wall!
ReplyDeleteit's a very pretty rock wall.
ReplyDeleteI thought that you had gone to Europe! Lovely.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun story. It is kinda neat no matter what the wall was at one time.
ReplyDeleteLove the Lighthouse shown below. You should climb the stairs and ladder---more photo ops. MB
Ah mystery and intrigue - you cannae beat it, lol.
ReplyDeleteI love that wall with all of those lovely old stones. :)
I like the stone wall and if it was in another country I might believe a castle had been behind it but alas we're shot on castles in north America. Interesting story of the apparition.
ReplyDeleteMystery makes it even more interesting!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
ReplyDeleteI love the castle story, too, along with mystery and history!! What a fun visit and so much beauty! Terrific past and captures for the day, EG! Enjoy your day!!
ReplyDeleteThe white lady may have long since fled the scene but the wall remains and it's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteit looks a bit like what I saw in Scotland. :) Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteImpressive wall... with or without the legends.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice story, the wall is pretty and something does seem to be missing from behind. The woods behind the wall do make a pretty scene. Lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteThe real question is... did you see any ghosties? Great wall with a great story! :)
ReplyDeleteRemnants of a past almost forgotten. Nice to see it still holds great interest:) Looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou need to be going out there in the dead of night to capture a photo of the ghost!
ReplyDeleteTine for a little 'haunting" LOL
ReplyDeleteThat wall looks as though it certainly has a ghost all of its own.
ReplyDeleteNice captures. I like the story as well.
ReplyDeleteNice post and wall.
ReplyDeleteI love a good ghostly story - but somehow, castles and Rochester NY do not go together in my mind!
ReplyDeleteOh this wall is very cool. The photos are great too but a pic of the lady in white would have been awesome:) B
ReplyDeleteintriguing...we have a version of a White Lady here.:p
ReplyDeleteI love mysteries such as this. I wish we could save all of our wonderful architecture rather than have it fall into disrepair from neglect...that is why I love to photograph many different things as time passes and some beauties no longer remain.
ReplyDeleteCalling by from Our World Tuesday, your words and photos tell a great story today.
ReplyDeleteI like the castle story and the haunting legend. The texture in the wall makes me think of the hands that may have built it before the moderns tools we have now that might make the task easier and/or faster.
ReplyDeleteIf this stone wall is anything to go by, I sure would have loved to see the whole castle.
ReplyDeleteIt is very interesting to visit places like this. All the history. I would love to be there with my camera.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a happy week:-)
really cool shots of this historical site, love the stone wall up close.
ReplyDeleteI love ghost stories. If you go there someday during Obon season (August 13 to 15), you may see the White lady. In Japan, in Obon season the spirits of the dead come back to stay with their families for three days.
