Water's Edge/CDP Theme Day/Rural Thursday

Georgian Bay on Lake Huron

Lake Huron is the second largest of the five Great Lakes, the third largest fresh-water lake on Earth.

On the northern shore of Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario is easternmost Great Lake, the smallest of the five in surface area (although Lake Erie contains less water),  the 17th largest lake in the world.

No one knows for sure what the word "Ontario" means. Some believe  it comes from the First Nation word "kanaderio" meaning "sparkling or beautiful water."  But the name may be a be a variation  of "Onitariio" meaning "beautiful lake." Or  it may have developed from "Skanadario" - "very pretty lake."  However,  the word may mean simply "a large body of water."

No matter what, it IS a pretty lake - even on a mostly overcast day like the one I took this photo.

  5. Beautiful photos. I've been swimming somewhere along that lake and it is really beautiful, with warm water and sandy beaches (in summer). Interesting how the names and meanings change over the centuries.

  8. Love the photos of the Great Lakes! I have seen all of them except Lake Ontario.

  9. It is very pretty there along the lake fronts. I've only ever been on the shores of one Great Lake (Lake Ontario) and I was struck by the enormity of it; much like an ocean I thought. Lake Huron appears to be much larger.

  15. So beautiful! I love the light of an overcast day for picture-taking, you seem to be able to capture the little details that glare can wash out.

Sad to say, the only one of the Great Lakes I've been to has been Lake Michigan.

  19. Hi, I’m Anne from Life on the Funny Farm (http://annesfunnyfarm.blogspot.com), and I’m visiting from Rural Thursday.

These pics are gorgeous! Can almost picture myself walking along the shore, throwing a stick in the water for my lab. I wish!

Anyway, thanks for sharing! I hope you can pop by my blog sometime to say hi…

  24. Great water's edge shots! Love the clouds, although I'm sure it's cold. Seeing both lakes I started to think of a 3rd one from a lyric in a Bruce Cockburn song: "the world is waiting, like a Lake Superior gail. . .it'll sweep you away, but you know that you're never alone. . ."
I like that curve of shoreline in the second shot.

  29. We're lucky to live in the vicinity of so many great lakes. I think Ontario must be named for the sparkling water aspect. I love it when the light shines just right!

  58. Great textures in both the clouds and the water - and I think the jury is in: whatever the origin of the name, most versions indicate it's a beautiful spot and I don't think there'll be any argument with that!
