Georgian Bay on Lake Huron
Lake Huron is the second largest of the five Great Lakes, the third largest fresh-water lake on Earth.
On the northern shore of Lake Ontario
Lake Ontario is easternmost Great Lake, the smallest of the five in surface area (although Lake Erie contains less water), the 17th largest lake in the world.
No one knows for sure what the word "Ontario" means. Some believe it comes from the First Nation word "kanaderio" meaning "sparkling or beautiful water." But the name may be a be a variation of "Onitariio" meaning "beautiful lake." Or it may have developed from "Skanadario" - "very pretty lake." However, the word may mean simply "a large body of water."
No matter what, it IS a pretty lake - even on a mostly overcast day like the one I took this photo.

I grew up on the eastern end, so the views shown here are very familiar.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. I've been swimming somewhere along that lake and it is really beautiful, with warm water and sandy beaches (in summer). Interesting how the names and meanings change over the centuries.
ReplyDeleteThe lake is beautiful with the fall colours on its shore.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very pretty lake scene.
ReplyDeleteThe composition in your second shot is superb!
ReplyDeleteHave a H(͡๏̯͡๏)T'ing Halloween!
Love the photos of the Great Lakes! I have seen all of them except Lake Ontario.
ReplyDeleteIt is very pretty there along the lake fronts. I've only ever been on the shores of one Great Lake (Lake Ontario) and I was struck by the enormity of it; much like an ocean I thought. Lake Huron appears to be much larger.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful choice for theme day. I like the subtle colors.
ReplyDeleteThe five great lakes are all so different. I've loved living near either Lake Michigan and Lake Superior all my life.
ReplyDeleteIt's very pretty, love the Fall colours. Enjoy November.
ReplyDeleteAlmost didn't see the water in the first picture.... the Lakes are grand!
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree, beautiful lake no matter what! I love those variations on Ontario, they all sound lovely.
ReplyDeleteLovely scenic sights!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! I love the light of an overcast day for picture-taking, you seem to be able to capture the little details that glare can wash out.
ReplyDeleteSad to say, the only one of the Great Lakes I've been to has been Lake Michigan.
I think all of the Great Lakes are fantastic and very photogenic!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics, I can almost feel the wind blowing in off the lake.
ReplyDeleteSuch a gorgeous scene... I forgot about theme day... oops!
ReplyDeleteHi, I’m Anne from Life on the Funny Farm (http://annesfunnyfarm.blogspot.com), and I’m visiting from Rural Thursday.
ReplyDeleteThese pics are gorgeous! Can almost picture myself walking along the shore, throwing a stick in the water for my lab. I wish!
Anyway, thanks for sharing! I hope you can pop by my blog sometime to say hi…
Reminds me of Lake Superior. I'll bet it is pretty cold most of the year, too! Beautiful scenery, though!
ReplyDeleteWhy do you always make me sigh, eh? :-)
ReplyDeleteI love how it is so immense that it looks like the sea.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty.
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful photos - and I really like some of the detail on the shore of the first one - the bird house is awesome!
ReplyDeleteGreat water's edge shots! Love the clouds, although I'm sure it's cold. Seeing both lakes I started to think of a 3rd one from a lyric in a Bruce Cockburn song: "the world is waiting, like a Lake Superior gail. . .it'll sweep you away, but you know that you're never alone. . ."
ReplyDeleteI like that curve of shoreline in the second shot.
-Kim
it is a beautiful lake, no matter the name
ReplyDeletei'd love to take a morning walk there right now :)
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Indiana and the great lakes were a huge part of that. Thanks so much for sharing. Miss seeing them now, that I live in Florida.

Fantastic shots of a beautiful place ~ nature is amazing ~ (A Creative Harbor) ^_^
ReplyDeleteWe're lucky to live in the vicinity of so many great lakes. I think Ontario must be named for the sparkling water aspect. I love it when the light shines just right!
ReplyDeleteHappy November!!
Two beautiful images EG, love the autumn foliage in the background.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this post on the Great Lakes, thanks so much. Your photos are beautiful as always.

ReplyDeleteI love all the clouds you got in these photos.
ReplyDeleteLake Huron is the one Great Lake I've visited, on both the Michigan and Canadian sides, and I agree - it is a pretty lake! Your second photo especially makes it look even prettier than I remember. Love all the Fall foliage right near the shore!

ReplyDeleteLove the perspective and colours on the bottom shot. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful and seems to go on forever.

ReplyDeletefun to think of the birth of and meaning of a name..! and ontario is a lovely name, as the lake! it must be a great lake, so lovely there by the lake! =)
ReplyDeleteHow lovely my friend! Looks to be a gorgeous day where you are. :)
ReplyDeletegorgeous shots!
ReplyDeleteThe clouds are almost as appealing as the water!
ReplyDelete=)
Great textures in both the clouds and the water - and I think the jury is in: whatever the origin of the name, most versions indicate it's a beautiful spot and I don't think there'll be any argument with that!
