Long-tailed ducks are divers, known to dive down as far as 60 metres (200 feet) to find mollusks, crustaceans and small fish.

This female was fun to watch dive as I never knew where she was going to appear next.
Male long-tailed duck
These two - as part of a large flock - are spending the winter here in central Ontario. They spend the spring and summer months in the Arctic.

ReplyDeleteWhat amazing ducks these are to be able to dive so deep for food. I've never seen them here in NB but then I'm not near open water in winter and perhaps they prefer milder temperatures there. Great photos. The male is beautiful.

I have never seen a long-tailed duck! Incredible contrast of black and white with an extra flourish of the tail like a whip!

Nice post and pictures! Long-tailed Ducks are uncommon migrants down here in Florida and a few have been spotted on the east coast recently. Road trip!
