Horses and Sleigh/Our World

Uxbridge farm

As we drove along a rural road last week, I was taken back in time. I haven't seen a  sleigh on wooden runners for years and years.

The kind farmer stopped to let me take another photo

  6. These are awesome photos! I wonder if they were going to get wood. When our neighbour up the road was living he used his horses and sled to haul wood in the winter. Wish I'd gotten a photo of that!

  20. It has been a long time since I have seen one of those sleighs!! But when you have the big horses, you have to give them some work to do... I bet the farmer was playing, though...

  25. I love those draft horses! I think they're among my most favorite animals (after Labrador Retrievers, of course). These are fantastic shots; you captured a wonderful, rare moment.

There is a farm a couple of miles from our house where they have a small herd of Shire draft horses that they use for plowing. Draft horses are becoming "heritage" animals as mechanization has replaced their labor.

  38. I love this! Reminds me of my childhood, too, going for "hay rides."
I've known a few people throughout my life that have kept draft /work horse teams.. and they've always amazed me. Gentle giants.
