Hummingbird Moth/Top Shot

Hummingbird moth

This critter has been visiting my Buddleia several times a day for the past few days. I cannot tell you how many failed photos I have taken of this moth because I have ditched most of them. This moth never stayed still!

I've been trying to capture the wings so you couldn't see see the motion, as in the photo below:

To stop the wing action, I decreased the shutter speed so much that most of the resulting images were very dark.  Yep, frustrating.

FINALLY, one photo nearly turned out the way I wanted.

  8. Well you sure did a good job in showing us the wings. aren't they amazing. Hard to believe it is not a bird. I have seen them in Eastern Washington but not on this side of the mountains. MB

  20. Wow! That must have been thrilling to take this picture and have it turn out so beautifully!!! I've never even heard of a hummingbird moth....Hummingbird Heartbeat, yes....moth....no. :) Neat!

  25. I know what you mean about frustrating...there is a GB Heron that is always at the strip pits of the evening, but he is so shy, he flies before I even think about getting close.
