Pintail Duck

 Male Northern Pintail (Anas acuta)

Wild ducks are on the move and Sunday afternoon I was fortunate enough to see this drake swimming amongst the reeds in a marsh I like to visit.  In the past, I have seen them in early spring swimming in ponds and marshes before all the ice has melted, but this was the first time I'd seen one in fall.

Pintail, his wonky reflection, and reflection of water-depth marker

Many ducks are less handsome in fall than they are during the  breeding season, but this species maintains their good looks throughout the year.

  10. Ah, to be a duck, to swim freely and leisurely in cool, wavy waters, floating along, as life goes by.

    Pretty shots!

  12. He is such a handsome fellow! I have never seen one in real life.

I ran through the strip pits last night...I do not know what has happened out there but there is hardly any wild life showing. I did not see one single short-eared owl. No deer. One pheasant, and a couple Northern Harriers. A handful of geese and some coots...it is a mystery.
