White-breasted Nuthatch

 White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis)

I love these agile little birds!  This one was making fast trips to and from the feeder, which made me suspect he was not eating all the seeds but perhaps  hiding some of them.

 Upside-down

I wasn't the only one watching. So was a sweet little hairy woodpecker. And guess what! As soon as the nuthatch hid his seeds and left, the woodpecker sneaked in and took the hidden seeds.

Looking away, perhaps suspecting something

  8. Wonderful captures! I just love watching these guys at the feeder, one hit the window the other day and was stunned for a bit. I worried the cat would end up getting it so I stood guard. I seem to be doing that a lot lately :)

  10. Woodpeckers are really sneaky! I think they are squirrels with feathers! Cute shots, though.

"Dripping icicles"? Boy, I haven't seen those in a long time. But as a kid we'd pull the long pointy ones off and lick them. Probably not a smart thing to do...

  12. An interesting observation. I'll watch ours more closely and see if they are doing likewise and getting robbed in the process.

  14. Awww, that woodpecker was smart, the nuthatch not so. :( Great photos. They are such sweet birds. I haven't seen one here yet this winter.

  15. A cracking little nuthatch you have there, quite different from our European Nuthatch. You made some interesting observations about the woodpecker stealing the nuthatch's stash of food.

  17. Nuthatches are such amazing acrobats!!! Love to see them jumping around various trees. Surprisingly they can be found in Tucson during the winter. Happy New Year!

  18. Awww, he thought no one was looking. He's going to be disappointed when he returns to his hiding place. My dog does the same thing with her food and the other two dogs always find it before she can return.

  19. A sneaky woodpecker! I've seen the jays watch where squirrels bury peanuts and go and help themselves.
    Survival of the fittest!
    Have a happy new year.
