Casino Art

 First Nation mural

A couple of weeks ago my husband and I visited the grounds of the Great Blue Heron Casino located on land owned by the Mississagusas of Scugog Island First Nation just east of Port Perry.

This mural (and three others) is painted on an outbuilding a few yards from the casino.  I like the bright colours and the simple style, which I think suits the building the murals are on.

Samples of other murals on same outbuilding

The art has been there a while.  These days there's a fence and walkway that obstruct part of the murals, making me wonder if the artwork is appreciated as much in 2014 as when it was first created.

Apparently there's art inside the casino too, but we didn't go inside  so I didn't take any photos.
I am Linking to Mosaic Monday HERE.

  1. I, too, like the simplicity and storytelling aspects of the style. Oddly enough the idea of building a casino on First Nation’s land in my neck of the woods comes up every now and again. People seem to have lots of mixed feelings about it.

  8. A most unusual style. I wouldn't have gone inside either - too much cigarette smoke.

  14. Bright and cheerful! Great colors. But, in re to the first photo: shouldn't the woman be in the back seat giving directions? :)

No, actually, I'm not jealous of your winter wear. Don't know why... Oh, that's right. I do know why. I don't need it! Yea!

  21. I like those. The Cherokee Hard Rock Casino here in Tulsa has some nice displays such as Cherokee Stickball sticks, gourds, beadwork and such on display.

  22. Storytelling through pictures. Casino Rama has some nice artwork too but I'm always in a hurry to get to a concert inside and forget to take photos.

  28. I love the "naive" style of these murals. THey're so cute and friendly! Not what I'd expect to be on a casino, but as I don't go to them, I guess I don't really know what to expect!
