Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii)
I was out looking for snow buntings and snowy owls when I spotted this hawk sitting atop...
Giving me the evil eye
storage crates in front of barns in the Holland Marsh, an area north of Toronto famous for growing vegetables such as onions and carrots. I suspect this hawk was searching for pigeons, not that hard to find but maybe hard to sneak up on if you're a hungry Cooper's hawk.

Wow! That is a great find!
ReplyDeleteWell captured.
Awesome sighting and photos. Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteA neighbor of mine was just telling me about a Coopers Hawk he had just photographed.
ReplyDeleteHello you! Hope you found something to eat!
ReplyDeleteNice capture. The first one is great. I got a photo of one last year. It was the first one I'd ever seen up close and right in our backyard.
ReplyDeleteHandsome dude... love the details in his feathers
ReplyDeleteLooks like the hawk is concentrating on something.
ReplyDeleteHow do you possibly get such great pictures?!
ReplyDeleteOn the lookout for dinner. Buntings beware!
ReplyDeleteToo funny, but he may have been worried that you might get his snack first!
ReplyDeletethey're so handsome.
ReplyDeleteHe is a handsome youngster. The winters are probably hard for him since it is a new experience hunting in the cold. He is doing his best to stay warm ... hope he finds food. Our lady Coopers Hawk (who has red eyes this year ... she made it to adulthood) Snatched a Starling in my yard yesterday. I am ambivalent, but was glad she got food to get her through another very cold day.

He certainly looks fierce!
ReplyDeleteYou got great pictures even if he was giving you the evil eye.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful hawk well photographed. You've got a good eye and a fast trigger finger.
ReplyDeleteI had a smallish hawk sitting on my backyard fence 2x recently...but I couldn't get a good glimpse as to what he was. From the coloring I think it might have been this kind. He was thinking to get one of my small birds, I imagine. :(
ReplyDeleteGreat shots!

He was sizing you up -- but decided you wouldn't make a good meal! What a beautiful little hawk!
ReplyDeleteWow! That look means business. Great shot of a beautiful bird.
ReplyDeleteAll fluffed up to keep warm too.
ReplyDeleteCool photo! That is one stern expression.
ReplyDeleteYup, that does look like the "evil eye," but what a magnificent creature.
ReplyDeleteHe's a beauty! You captured him so well. :)
ReplyDeleteTo wspaniały ptak i miło na niego patrzeć. Pozdrawiam.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great bird and nice to look at him. Yours.
HI EG Great shot of the Hawk but keep looking for the Snow Buntings because I would love to see them. We have not seen them here this year yet in Northern Ireland
ReplyDeleteI love how he is so puffed up to stay warm! Down certainly does the trick.
ReplyDeleteGreat cropped Coopers Hawk. Enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteJoy
Methinks he has not yet found a pigeon for he does not look very happy! Very cool photo!
ReplyDeleteWhat a majestic bird. Fantastic shot !
ReplyDeleteIt's a very handsome bird.

ReplyDeleteCool serie!
ReplyDeletethat is an evil-eye look - but how cool to come across this hawk (but I'd keep moving cause it looks like it might be willing to take on a human if no pigeons are available).
ReplyDeleteThat's a cracking bird. Great shots
