Male hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus)
As you can see here, this cute guy likes peanuts. He also has a passion for suet and sunflower seeds.
Hammering a peanut shell to get the nut out
They usually forage along tree trunks and branches, but here someone has placed peanuts in the shell on a tree stump.
Wondering if he heard something click - a shutter perhaps?
I am connecting to Stewart M's Wild Bird Wednesday HERE
Cheeky woodpeckers; they've always been amongst my favourite birds. Beautifully captured!
ReplyDeleteUndoubtedly emanating from someone intent upon stealing one of his precious peanuts. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat birds they are.
ReplyDeletewow, i love that he is like that is my peanut. it looks huge compared to his shape. a treat for sure. ( :

You get spectacular bird pictures!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that they like peanuts. I usually put suet out for them, but I will get some peanuts for them, too :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful close up.
ReplyDeletethis is so nice, to see the birds so close. Kind person who left the peanut amidst the snow. {:-Deb
ReplyDeleteGreat bird photos, I can see some sort of fluffy feathers, I suppose that is why his is called hairy.
ReplyDeleteDarla
Look at the treasures he's found! I've never seen woodpeckers up so close, what lovely patterns they have!
ReplyDeleteWas it you who put the peanuts there? Great-looking bird but I've found woodpeckers of any variety to be kinda pesky! Love that first photo!
ReplyDeleteso very cute.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little guy! Nice close-ups.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots!
ReplyDeleteI knew they liked suet, but not peanuts!
Oh what fabulous shots! Great detail, I can see the difference between a Hairy and a Downy with these photos! This guys beak is much longer.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if my Acorn Woodpeckers and Scrub Jays would like peanuts in the shell. I'll have to get some as a treat for them. Great shots.
ReplyDeleteHe's a beauty. Great shots.
ReplyDeleteThat peanut is bigger than his whole head! What a go-getter! Great shots!!!
ReplyDeleteI miss my hairy and downy friends that I left behind in the States. Thanks for reminding my why.
ReplyDeleteHe sure gave you some lovely poses.
ReplyDeleteThe last pisture is so nice.
ReplyDeleteGood composition.

They and the Downeys sure love the Peanut suet feeders too. We like to watch them. MB
ReplyDeleteAwesome photos and a nice bird.
ReplyDeleteGreat serie of photos!
ReplyDeleteHow Super Handsome he is!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Perhaps it mistook the shutter for a peanut being cracked open by a competitor?! Whatever the case may be, I'm glad he let himself be photographed!
ReplyDeleteThey are the most common woodpeckers that I see in the city and it always a thrill for me!
ReplyDeletecute, cute and more cute. A face you just gotta love.
ReplyDeleteThat peanut is quite the bill-full.
ReplyDeleteHe's cute and really enjoying the treat. I have them here at the sunflower silo and the suet cakes almost every day - male and female. I just can't get a good photo of them through the window. :(
ReplyDeleteLove the woodies, great sighting and photos of the Hairy woodie!
ReplyDeleteWe get lots of Downies here but not many Hairies, so this is fun to see.
ReplyDeleteIt appears he was looking at you. Beautiful bird.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of this cheeky woodpecker.
ReplyDeleteGreat characterful shots. We always feel very deprived here in the UK where we only have 3 types of woodpecker - and one of those is almost impossible to see.
ReplyDeleteHe's a hungry, hungry boy from the looks of that first pic. Great captures.
ReplyDeleteWonderful series! The Hairy is not common around here and it's always a treat to see one. Especially one with a beak full of peanut!
ReplyDeleteVery nice photographs!
These are wonderful photos of the Hairy Woodpecker. I especially like that first picture with the peanut in his beak.
ReplyDeleteI love the woodpeckers. He's a pretty boy!
ReplyDeleteWoody has a BIG appetite!
ReplyDeleteThat peanut looks so big compared to the size of woody's mouth as well as woody himself. Great photos.
ReplyDeleteYou got wonderful close ups, this little friend is so adorable!Cute red spot!
ReplyDeleteLéia
Smart bird
ReplyDeleteBeautiful close-ups!
ReplyDeleteHe is fluffy, is that why he's called the Hairy Woodpecker?
ReplyDeletegreat shots of your pecker. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a mouthful in that top photo. Great shots!
ReplyDeleteWhat great shots!
ReplyDeleteGreat images of woodpecker cracking a nut !
ReplyDeleteJust awesome pictures! The woodpecker with the peanut ("amendoim" in Portuguese) is stunning!
ReplyDeleteHere where I live we have yellow and red woodpecker too.
