Hairy Woodpecker

 Male hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus)

As you can see here, this cute guy likes peanuts.   He also has a passion for suet and sunflower seeds.

Hammering a peanut shell to get the nut out

They usually forage along tree trunks and branches, but here someone has placed peanuts in the shell on a tree stump.

Wondering if he heard something click - a shutter perhaps?

    I didn't know that they like peanuts. I usually put suet out for them, but I will get some peanuts for them, too :)

    Great bird photos, I can see some sort of fluffy feathers, I suppose that is why his is called hairy.

    Was it you who put the peanuts there? Great-looking bird but I've found woodpeckers of any variety to be kinda pesky! Love that first photo!

    Oh what fabulous shots! Great detail, I can see the difference between a Hairy and a Downy with these photos! This guys beak is much longer.

    I wonder if my Acorn Woodpeckers and Scrub Jays would like peanuts in the shell. I'll have to get some as a treat for them. Great shots.

    Perhaps it mistook the shutter for a peanut being cracked open by a competitor?! Whatever the case may be, I'm glad he let himself be photographed!

    He's cute and really enjoying the treat. I have them here at the sunflower silo and the suet cakes almost every day - male and female. I just can't get a good photo of them through the window. :(

    Great characterful shots. We always feel very deprived here in the UK where we only have 3 types of woodpecker - and one of those is almost impossible to see.

    Wonderful series! The Hairy is not common around here and it's always a treat to see one. Especially one with a beak full of peanut!

    Just awesome pictures! The woodpecker with the peanut ("amendoim" in Portuguese) is stunning!
