Red-tailed Hawk

 Look who came to dinner!

Yep, a Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis).  My husband and I were walking a trail in a  conservation area, enjoying nature and taking photos with a million hundred other people on Sunday afternoon. Chickadees and bluejays were enjoying seeds provided by their human visitors when all the birds suddenly scattered.

 Hawk surveying the area

"Don't worry! Be happy!" suggested the hawk.  He/she was certainly taking its own advice.

Red tail - proof that this is a red-tailed hawk

  1. Super photos Camera Girl. Last year there were plenty of hawks here. This year I never saw any.

  2. Nice pictures - and I do like that red tail.

We had a similar experience with a different predator last week - we were walking along a foot path when we realised that all the birds on one side of the path were alarm calling - a quick looking into the bushes revealed our first snake of the spring - rather a good sight I have to say!

  3. Yep, a sure sign of a hawk around is when the smaller birds scatter and the squirrels begin to flatten themselves against a tree or the ground.

  4. Wow. that was a piece of good fortune the hawk arriving like that and you didn't waste the photo opportunity. i guess like the small birds, it was there to eat too.

  10. Beautiful photos of the hawk! I can always tell when there is a hawk nearby because all the squirrels and birds disappear from my back yard.

  14. Small birds are usually the best giveaway that a raptor is around. And it's always fun to see one.

  15. Very nice photos. Last week here there was all of a sudden a tremendous flapping of wings as all the dove scattered from a nearby tree - all except for one. It and the Peregrine Falcon fell to the ground in a puff of flying feathers. And me with no camera nearby.

  29. Well, just look at that deceiving little cute face. Who would ever guess he/she was in search of a meal at the expense of the little birds who whoosed out of there. Lucky you to get close enough for such good shots.
