Penny-farthing Bike
May 1st is City Daily Photo Theme Day. This month's theme is REVOLUTION.The 19th-century Penny-farthing's big front wheel made it possible to move forward faster with one revolution than the boneshaker, the earlier bicycle version. We've come a long way since then - today's bicycle gears are a BIG improvement over that huge front wheel.
I have no idea how you get up on one of these! Doesn't it look dangerous?
I am linking to City Daily Photo Theme Days HERE
Hi TIna,
ReplyDeleteThanks for positing a picture of a Penny Farthing!
What a lovely antique!
I think you climb on these from the back.
I can't remember how I got one one of these the last time I did. I think I climbed up from the back.
I will dig up an old photo and post sometime.
You just made my day/night my friend - thanks!
Have a Beautiful Day!
Peace :)
And once you manage to arrive on the seat of this contraption, it looks like steering is a bit of a challenge, too!
ReplyDeleteOh, what a great antique indeed and what a terrific capture for the day!! You do find the best!!! Hope you're getting ready for a lovely weekend!! Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteGreat theme day post.
ReplyDeleteGood grief, one would need a stool! How on earth would you ride it? And this one is huge! I like the shadow, too. Yes, I can see where it would go pretty fast, but oh my that teeny tiny seat! Did someone have this in their yard as a decoration?
ReplyDeleteThis we can called an revolution.
ReplyDeleteNowadays the bicycles even have batteri and that is not bad at al. Well, I think so.
Nice picture and I wish you a happy day:)
yes and when up how do you get off!! They were dangerous! Great image.
ReplyDeleteI imagine getting off one is easier, but more painful ;-)
ReplyDeleteSnap! We had the same idea :). Super!
ReplyDeleteA great shot! I also think getting off is easier ... :)
ReplyDeleteI tried one of them. Big mistake!
ReplyDeleteYou won't believe the photo I'm going to post in a few days. :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, this is beautiful !
ReplyDeleteGreat theme day shot, like also the shadows !
Good morning, what a cool bike.. I love the shadow too. Great capture.. Have a happy weekend!
ReplyDeletethis one is much prettier and decorative than the ones i have seen on TV. i saw Mike on American Pickers ride one, he just kind of leaped up there. yes, it does look dangerous. i love the shadow bike
ReplyDeleteamazing find!
ReplyDeleteIt's an odd contraption by modern standards.
ReplyDeletePerfect for the day, EG! That is quite a fancy one with the curlicues along the frame.
ReplyDeletePretty fancy bike!
ReplyDeleteThere's a gentleman who takes his penny farthing into our local Santa Claus Parade.... dressed in the correct outfit of the era of course.
You have managed several examples of REVOLUTION in your photo: design of bicycles and the revolutions of the wheel when riding.
ReplyDeleteI have seen people ride them but there is no way that I would ever even try.
ReplyDeleteI've seen people on unicycles riding the rough rocky trails here using poles to balance themselves. That isn't happening for me either.
It is sure pretty but I can't imagine trying to ride it.
ReplyDeleteDarla
What a decorative piece that would be.
ReplyDeleteThe logistics of riding one of those things always seemed baffling to me.
ReplyDeleteSo cool! Great interpretation on the theme too.
ReplyDelete✿⊱·. Foto maravilhosa!!!
ReplyDeleteÓtimo fim de semana!
Beijinhos..·°هჱ

What a great idea to put together with REVOLUTION! And your earlier post, White Crocus is beautiful! Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteNot sure I will be able to ride that thing.., Great idea for this theme day!
ReplyDeleteI have often wondered how you got on one of these, and how you dismount. I don't think you could hurry either process. Great picture and shadow!
ReplyDeleteFab picture that shadow makes it...
ReplyDeleteOh boy, Tina what a little beauty!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I love it. I wouldn't dare try riding it though!
ReplyDeleteThe frills are completely unexpected. When I have seen old bicycles they seemed pretty simple and unadorned.
ReplyDeleteI would not want to get on one of these, instead use it as decoration.
ReplyDeleteThat is most fabulous penny farthing I've ever seen EG, so pretty.. Tres jolie shadow shot also. Prettiest revolution shot so far :)
ReplyDeleteTruly a wonder to think about how they drive this cycles! Great finding
ReplyDeletewhat a very cool looking antique!! love the added metal swirls along the frame. nice to look at...but i wouldn't want to ride one! it makes me wonder...how did they do that anyway? how many people to hold bike steady...and then, what? a ladder to get on??
ReplyDeleteanyway, you have a happy weekend!! :)
Stilts perhaps?
ReplyDeleteooooo how i LOVE this, let me count the ways!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty although I'm glad I don't have to cycle on one of those. :-)
ReplyDeleteI too wonder how to ride this.
ReplyDeleteGreat pic.
Love all those lines and shadows, great capture!
