Cranberries

 Harvested cranberries and tree reflections

Ten days ago my husband and I visited a Muskoka cranberry marsh. The weather and foliage were beautiful and bonus - the cranberries were being harvested.  In the photo above you can see cranberries ready to be cleaned, dried and sorted.

Sightseeing "train" and reflection

Busloads of tourists visit this marsh every October and part of the package includes a ride on this "train" to see the bogs up close and hear about the growing and processing of cranberries.

FYI: My husband and I are cheap frugal. We drove ourselves to the marsh, walked around the bogs and asked questions of the enthusiastic and knowledgeable workers in the marsh's store and various food kiosks.

  11. I would do what you did...I have never wanted to do things in a group where I couldn't go at my own pace.

  12. Beautiful shots! I do like cranberries in certain things, like muffins.

I'm assuming this is in Bala, given that they have a festival up there for cranberries.

  15. Gives you a greater appreciation for food when you see the labor involved in getting it to your table.

  22. I'm with you. Definitely into the frugal way to enjoy scenery. Fascinating views of the cranberry processing.

  23. By being frugal you got to hear what the workers had to say, which was probably much more authentic than what the "train engineer" told his tour group.

  24. Very nice. Massachusetts has many cranberry marshes, but for some reason I have never been there at the right time to see a harvest.

So, you are cheap? A new insight.

  29. I don't know why, because I have only seen one cranberry bog in my life and it was in the dead of winter when nothing was going on, but I have always been fascinated by them. The harvesting in the water and the whole thing.
