U/Alphabe-Thursday

 Peterborough Lift-lock seen from the south side - built in 1904

U is for UP, and the top of the lift-lock is certainly UP - 65 feet in the air. Boats that wish to travel westerly on the Trent-Severn Waterway must be raised that much to continue. See the large pan on the left side of the lift-lock? It's raised and at the top. A similar pan is on the right side mostly under water in this photo.

    At a lake nearby we have a series of locks, but nothing like this. Design and size dwarfs ours.

    Locks and windmills both excite me...not the hew variety but the older ones. They are magical to me...and bring out my inner child. The windmills move wind and the locks with their water help to move boats. That is exciting to think about. Your pictures of these locks is great. You really got a great capture.Is this an old lock that has been modernized.

    Very cool!This reminds me that there are locks in Seattle. I saw them many years ago, before I moved to the Pacific Northwest. Now I'm curious to see them again.

    This is pretty narrow. It can't take very big vessels or many vessels at a time, I suspect.

    Locks are impressive feats. I go gaga when I get to watch them at work. Doesn't matter if they only raise or lower a few feet. To have that kind of mind to invent locks.
