Peterborough Lift-lock seen from the south side - built in 1904
U is for UP, and the top of the lift-lock is certainly UP - 65 feet in the air. Boats that wish to travel westerly on the Trent-Severn Waterway must be raised that much to continue. See the large pan on the left side of the lift-lock? It's raised and at the top. A similar pan is on the right side mostly under water in this photo.
A hydraulic lift raises the pan with boats in it to the top.

ReplyDeleteHave always enjoyed watching the process and mechanisms of lockes in action EG, pretty amazing concept.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be there and watch this happen. Great photos.
ReplyDeleteisn't our species ingenious?
ReplyDeleteThanks, EG. I needed a "lift" this morning. :-)
ReplyDeleteI like locks, and even more to see them functioning. This is great!
ReplyDeleteWe are determined creatures, are we not.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting and to think it has been working all these years.
ReplyDeletei have only seen these in photos and movies... they always amaze me
ReplyDeleteI've never seen these in person so I really appreciate these great photos. Quite an operation for sure!
ReplyDeleteThose locks are amazing!
ReplyDeleteAt a lake nearby we have a series of locks, but nothing like this. Design and size dwarfs ours.
ReplyDeleteLike many others I'm fascinated by the locks!! Great captures for the day as always! Hope your week is going well!!

ReplyDeleteIt is such an impressive structure.
ReplyDeleteRight here in my new neck of the woods.. though I've not gone to see it yet. Your fine photos have drawn me to do so... soonish. :)

ReplyDeleteI've watched it working many times and always find it fascinating, EG! Good shots!
ReplyDeleteI have seen these before. Fascinating to watch.
ReplyDeleteWe are our Florida boat through locks pretty often, but this one looks scarier! Good pictures.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the best sights in Ontario, IMO. A real marvel of engineering. :)
ReplyDeleteWow they are pretty sophisticated locks. Very different to the ones on the canals here
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible piece of engineering!! xx
ReplyDeleteNice photos. I have always been fascinated by lift-locks.
ReplyDeleteMy parents took my daughter there many years ago! Great memory!
ReplyDeleteI love watching the barges go through the locks on the Mississippi River. Great captures!
ReplyDeleteLocks and windmills both excite me...not the hew variety but the older ones. They are magical to me...and bring out my inner child. The windmills move wind and the locks with their water help to move boats. That is exciting to think about. Your pictures of these locks is great. You really got a great capture. Is this an old lock that has been modernized.
ReplyDeleteoh a Lift Lock is interesting! We all know about the ones that fill or empty with water....

artmusedog and carol
That is impressive!
ReplyDeleteThat's some amazingly thorough contraptions! What a problem solver!
ReplyDeleteIts already been said here. So i am basically reiterating that it is an impressive structure.
ReplyDeleteSuch interesting structures.
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty narrow. It can't take very big vessels or many vessels at a time, I suspect.
ReplyDeleteLocks are impressive feats. I go gaga when I get to watch them at work. Doesn't matter if they only raise or lower a few feet. To have that kind of mind to invent locks.
ReplyDeleteThe View from the Top of the Ladder
I would love to see this in real life...
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post! Talk about having an impressive invention! Wow! Great choice. Enjoy your weekend and thanks for sharing.
