Almost Autumn/ Nature Notes

Autumn is on its way

The days are still warm but the nights are noticeably cooler now. As you can see in the largest square, some apples are ripening! Then moving clockwise, notice the Virginia creeper berries (Parthenocissus quinqefolia) are very blue even though the leaves are still very green. Only a few St John's wort (Hypericum) blossoms are still flowering and the Joe-pye-weed (Eupatorium purpureum) is beginning to fade - the monarch butterfly doesn't appear to notice, though. Bittersweet (Celastrus) berries have turned golden but have not yet opened to reveal their orange interior, and the asters (not sure which variety) are just beginning to share their autumn beauty.

The apples are looking great, as is everything else in this mosaic. I'm looking forward to cooler weather.

Hiya EG,

Such a pleasing combination of colours. And yes, all of a sudden it is cold again. I'm not sure I am ready for 8 months of padded jackets :-)

I wonder if it's Celastrus that I photographed in Virginia. At least now I have a name of something that bears something orange.

Thanks for the tour, pye-weed, creeper berries, apples and all.

I welcome the relief from the heat, but it also means the flowers are soon going to be finished for another year...

Wonderful photos and mosaic. The apples look good. This time of year is the best for apples.

It's so exciting to see signs of Autumn. You are definitely farther along than we are but every new sign has me practically clapping with glee. Beautiful set of photographs. I'm happy to see your monarch butterfly because I haven't seen any here this year at all.

Such a beautiful mosaic of the end-of-summer plants! It's not cooler here yet, but I am so looking forward to its arrival!

Grrr--how do you do this?? Your mosaic is gorgeous, the pictures crisp and clear, and the colors perfect. I don't want to see summer go but I do really like Autumn. Well as long as it doesn't rain too much. August and September are usually our summer anyway. MB

Autumn almost always means "Summer has arrived" here by the Bay. Often Sept. and Oct. are our warmest months.

Those apples in your collage really do speak of Autumn to me.

I wish you didn't remind me about impending autumn. Around here, it is so hot people can think of nothing but the relief of cooler weather, but as soon as we get it, the longing for the days of summer will return.

The world around us is definitely starting to prepare for autumn. Thanks for focusing our attention a bit- it would be easy to miss.
