Cranberry Harvest/ My World

Harvesting cranberries, Johnston's Marsh, Ontario

October is the month for harvesting cranberries in Ontario. Last year my husband and I visited this marsh to see the harvesting firsthand. (I cannot remember why these photos did not make it to this blog last year. I'm SURE there must have been a good reason.)

As you can see, even the young were involved in this operation. The older lad got to run the machinery and the younger "got to" hop in and out of the water (which isn't very deep) to change the rectangular pans that were collecting the cranberries. (In the upper left-hand corner of the mosaic below, you can see the lad in the water.)

Reflections in Johnston's Marsh

The trees were absolutely gorgeous last year, I think perhaps a tad lovelier than this year.

Ripe for harvest

What a great post! I've not seen cranberry harvesting before, either. Except there's an ad on TV showing two guys in a cranberry bog up to their waists in water...that should have been a hint, right?

Love all the colors. I'm sure there was a good reason why you didn't post these pics last year.

The reflections of the trees in the marsh are absolutely stunning.
Thanks for the pictures of the cranberry harvest. I'm not aware that I have seen pictures of this before.

What great phots, I'm sure there must of been a good reason why they didn't make it...:D Very interesting how they harvest cranberries. I love all the fall colors of the trees in the background! We don't get that here!

Amazing colours. I had no idea that cranberries grew in water. I always thought they were picked in the woods...

Excellent topic, EG. I too think the colors were better last year but then again we had more sun and less rain.
I don't recall any Cranberry Bogs out here but on the Oregon Coast there are some and it is very interesting to watch.
That reflection shot is stunning. Thanks for showing us this harvest. MB

Wonderful shots of the cranberry harvest. I saw a show on PBS about harvesting cranberries some time ago and it was new to me.

The harvester reminds me of the airboats in the Everglades. Thanks for sharing a totally new (to me) fall scene.

What a good post! I've never seen this either, and it's very interesting. The fall colors are gorgeous; our colors were much better last year also.

I haven't thought of cranberries of a fruit you harvest before. Gorgeous colours cutting through the water. Interesting post too.

I enjoyed seeing the cranberry harvest on your post! I think the foliage is less brilliant than last year too--perhaps we've had too many storms this fall?

Very interesting, I've never seen this before.

I love your frost photo below. We finally had our first frost a few days ago, much later than normal.

I'm not sure what I am looking at but it looks very interesting. I love the Fall colors.

I don't think we are going to get much Fall color. It looks like everything is just fading slowly here in Oklahoma.

Beautiful! can I visit all these places? will you be my guide?

Egads! Look at all the comments. My friend in Massachusetts lives in front of a cranberry bog. I was there last Wednesday and the harvest was over and the bog was drained. You must be on a different schedule up there.

Colors are amazing here! Love you "got to" hop in and out of the water..reminds me of my brother making some undesirable task sound fun so he could pawn it off.

This was a great spot to visit! I heard that it went well this year, too.
Have you ever seen the Rick Mercer video of his trip to the marsh? It was hilarious. I have a link on my sidebar.

Whenever I see pictures like this, especially ones basically alien to my part of the country, I think "How and why did anyone figure out how to harvest cranberries by boat in the first place?" The method seems both ingenious and primitive, and maybe even fun if you're a teenage boy and the weather is warm.

I love the reflection of the autumn leaves on the cranberry bog. Gorgeous.

Cranbery harvests. They do it in New England and New Jersey and now I learn that they do it in Canada. Jack and I went to Ontario and Quebec this summer and loved it!

Cranberry harvesting - something very new for me too, EG. What a wonderful presentation!

Thanks for this lesson, I have absolutely no udea that cranberry grows this way.

Should I get urinary tract infection again, I will remember these two boys.

Looks like you are the few people in the whole wide world who know their cranberries. i read all the comments and only Trish knows about this.
