Below the Peterborough Lift Locks

This week's Photo Hunter challenge: Lock

Peterborough's hydraulic lift locks are on the Trent-Severn Waterway, 386 kilometres that link central Ontario's "cottage country."


Looking below from above the lift locks


Yep, that's snow. This photo was taken in January, so the lift locks were closed. The locks are open from May through October.

    Ah, home sweet home. I'll be there in a couple of weeks. Perhaps I'll have to take a summer photo of it for a "Sudbury (MA)DP on the Road" series.

    Wow that's a humongous lock. I went with a canal lock but mine is small compared to that.

    I've never seen such a lock before. I agree with Hilda. In the first photo it looks definitely like a castle or fortress.

    I love locks...love sitting by them on sunny days and watching the boats go up and down. There's an amazing lock in Scotland called the Falkirk wheel...have you seen it?

    Fascinating Locks.

    To day most people are not aware the importantence of Locks regarding the development of modern society and trade, long before the railways and cars.

    In the beginning the canal-vessels were driven by horses, from paths on land. Even through tunnels.
