Cranberry Harvest/ My World

Harvesting cranberries, Johnston's Marsh, Ontario

October is the month for harvesting cranberries in Ontario. Last year my husband and I visited this marsh to see the harvesting firsthand. (I cannot remember why these photos did not make it to this blog last year. I'm SURE there must have been a good reason.)

As you can see, even the young were involved in this operation. The older lad got to run the machinery and the younger "got to" hop in and out of the water (which isn't very deep) to change the rectangular pans that were collecting the cranberries. (In the upper left-hand corner of the mosaic below, you can see the lad in the water.)

Reflections in Johnston's Marsh

The trees were absolutely gorgeous last year, I think perhaps a tad lovelier than this year.

Ripe for harvest

  3. What a great post! I've not seen cranberry harvesting before, either. Except there's an ad on TV showing two guys in a cranberry bog up to their waists in water...that should have been a hint, right?

Love all the colors. I'm sure there was a good reason why you didn't post these pics last year.

  9. Excellent topic, EG. I too think the colors were better last year but then again we had more sun and less rain.
I don't recall any Cranberry Bogs out here but on the Oregon Coast there are some and it is very interesting to watch.
That reflection shot is stunning. Thanks for showing us this harvest. MB

  33. I'm not sure what I am looking at but it looks very interesting. I love the Fall colors.

I don't think we are going to get much Fall color. It looks like everything is just fading slowly here in Oklahoma.

  47. Whenever I see pictures like this, especially ones basically alien to my part of the country, I think "How and why did anyone figure out how to harvest cranberries by boat in the first place?" The method seems both ingenious and primitive, and maybe even fun if you're a teenage boy and the weather is warm.

I love the reflection of the autumn leaves on the cranberry bog. Gorgeous.
