The NATIONAL flag of Canada flying above the Administrative Offices, Port Hope, Ontario
The Maple Leaf has been a symbol of Canadian identity since it made its first appearance on February 15, 1965.
Canada's flag is a symbol of NATIONAL unity, representing all Canadian citizens regardless of race, language, belief, or opinion.
The Maple Leaf replaced the Canadian Red Ensign, which featured the British Union Jack in the upper left-hand corner:

I don't recall seeing our former Canadian flag, ever. It is attractive but I shall always be proud to wave our flag bearing the maple leaf. Thanks for this post!
ReplyDeleteI've always liked the fact that the Canadian flag had a leaf on it~ way more identifiable than a series of stripes, crests & stars :-)
ReplyDeleteLovely photo...
ReplyDeleteI absolutely need to come visit Canada, it's been way too long...
I've never seen the previous flag before.
ReplyDeleteI never even knew there was a previous flag. I like the current one...it's really striking...but this little bit of history was quite nifty.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to Alphabe-Thursday's letter "N".
I always enjoy visiting you.
A+
A creative way to feature the 14th letter of the alphabet!
ReplyDeleteGreat pic, always nice to fly your colors:@)
ReplyDeleteMy daughter had the pleasure of putting the flag on the peace tower during one coop placement! Great N shot.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the Canadian National Flag...so glad you posted this. I did not realize that it replaced a former flag so thank you very much for the education!
ReplyDeleteYour flag is really beautiful! And this is a nice picture of it :-)
ReplyDeleteThe wrought iron fence at the top is great. I wonder who gets to put the flag up there?
ReplyDeleteNice shot! When we were in Canada this past May, we saw this maple leaf flag everywhere and it is beautiful. Canadians are proud of their flag as we are also.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised to learn that the maple leaf flag is so new. Like everyone else, I love it. It is simple and distinctive.
ReplyDeleteAside from my own, this was one of the first flags I learned to identify when I was young.
ReplyDeleteBoth are very pretty but I like the new one with the leaf best.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful picture of the flag against the sky.
ReplyDeleteI remember the Ensign. In fact I'm so old I can remember my school flying Elmer The Safety Elephant flag.
ReplyDeleteI recognize the Maple Leaf but I sure wouldn't have recognized the earlier one although it was flown during my lifetime.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the history lesson.
Darla
That's a gorgeous lookout point!
ReplyDeleteNeat post!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo! I like the current Canadian flag much more than the old one. Plus, it's so much easier to recognize unlike the flags that are just color stripes. Especially countries that have the same color stripes but in different order. The maple leaf is very original and everyone who sees it knows that it is the Canadian flag.
ReplyDeleteI think all flags in the world are symbol of a country's identity.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that. It seems I have seen the Maple Leaf forever. Well I like the newer version. MB
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful flag...one of my favorites.
ReplyDelete=)
I am far more fond of the maple leaf! Beautiful flag.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and his family immegrated to the U.S. from Canada sixty years ago this week. I love the maple leaf on your flag for its quiet elegance. It represents your entire country!!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful flag with an interesting history.
ReplyDeleteAlways good to see the Canadian flag.
ReplyDeleteCheers
I remember the day the Maple Leaf first went up the flag pole at my elementary school. The whole school gathered outside to watch the Red Ensign go down and the Maple Leaf rise. I love it - it's a great symbol.
ReplyDeleteI love the maple leaf as well :o) Thanks for sharing this info...I didn't realize that it has only been shown as the National flag of Canada since 1965.
ReplyDeleteBlessings & Aloha!
