Ice Fishing Derby/ My World

Get Ready...

Notice that this ice hut (insulated and heated with propane) is on skis for easy hauling.

Set...

Two men have pushed the hut forward to hook it onto the  Bombardier.

GO!!

Sunday, February 13th, was the last day of The Great Georgina Ice Fishing Derby.




Georgina is on the south side of Lake Simcoe and the town just north of East Gwillimbury. I'm not a fisher but there are plenty of people around here who fish in winter for perch, northern pike and whitefish.

For decades, Lake Simcoe has been called the "Ice Fishing Capital of North America."

    This is ice fishing in comfort! We ice fish in the raw, no shanties, lots of tip-ups, lots of drilling ice by hand to keep you warm (42" last weekend!), lots of cold wind to remind you that it is winter. Never more refreshing!

    Great photos, I especially liked this Bombardier, pretty expensive looking!

    A heated hut on a frozen lake sounds very cozy ... providing it doesn’t soften the ice. Taking away the hut on skis is a brilliant move! The front of the red vehicle looks like it has snowshoes.

    I must say that when I first viewed the thumbnail of your picture on my blog I actually thought it was a mailbox! The thumbnail had a very strange cropping. But now I see the whole thing, I must say this is so foreign to me as to be almost surreal! There's lots of fishing in my area but it's on creeks and bayous and often in a pirogue (pronounced pee-row), a flat-bottomed canoe associated with Cajun culture.

    I always thought ice fishing was the epitome of roughing it but I guess the hut makes it easier.

    I had not seen a bombardier in ages. They used them in Antarctica for some time. Great post.
    I'm going fishing today too only I shall be doing it from a jetty and with lots of sunscreen on.

    Ice fishing is not part of my world. I understand, though, that if the lakes are still frozen in the Sierra at the end of Arpril when fishing season opens, some hearty souls will go out and drill holes in the ice. There won't be any little huts, though.

    I would have loved to have seen this. What fun. (I'm not a fisher, either, butI know someone who loves to ice fish and I've always been intrigued - though not enough to go with him!!)

    My parents' home was Barrie, so I know what the ice huts look like in all their glory. We always used to fear that someone would push the limit and go through the Bay. And someone always did.

    Had to laugh at Kathy's comment. This is indeed a far cry from a pirogue on the bayou, but I've seen lots of ice fishermen and very few pirogues. However, I've never seen a contraption like that Bombardier. The thumbnail picture made me think of the "tour buses" north of Churchill, Manitoba, taking tourists for photo ops with polar bears.
    Yes, Canadians will do anything for the sake of fishing. Great post for this time of year!

    Minnesota Lakes are meccas for fisherman...any time of the year. During the cold season the lakes are dotted with ice houses, some of which are very luxurious.

    I’d love to go to the lake to see how ice-fishing is like, if I could stay in that warm movable hut. I like blue and red color on pale blue ice. Beautiful photos!

    Wow that is totally amazing. We seldom have even a thin sheet of ice onthe water the west side of the state. In Eastern Washington there is ice fishing but not like this. Usually just little portable huts or just men hunched over the hole in the ice.
    This is great.
