Outdoor Rink/ Our World

 Lake Scugog

Here's proof that not ALL Canadian kids are playing video games all day. I was ending a day of taking photos when I happened upon these guys still practicing even though the sun was below the horizon.

My husband and I were returning from a road trip and actually saw a few homemade rinks with boys and girls on them. Because it wasn't quite dark, these kids were not ready to go home. I guess they could still see the puck.

  1. Playing hockey on a frozen lake - so Canadian. I feel homesick.

  2. I am surprised that everything has managed to stay frozen with the up and down weather we have been having.

I agree a very Canadian image.

Heading out grocery shopping today, wish me luck!!! Have some recipes on my blog today.

  3. I love it when I see kids outside playing. So many are hanging out inside with their video games, TV, and computers. Sometimes I wonder if we are better off with all this technology, although, I like it myself. lol

  5. Some of my more pleasant teen-age evenings were spent on outdoor skating rinks, with an occasion rest in the warming house. I understand totally why these kids were outside, trying to perfect their techniques! Would I do it now? Not on your life!!

  6. There was always one of those somewhere near when I was growing up. I didn't play hockey and I hated the cold, but still those pictures made me nostalgic.

  9. This is what my kids did in the winter, they played pond hockey, and some years we made a rink in our back yard. Thanks for the memories.

  10. There is a timeless quality to these lovely outdoor captures. Your photos of children playing at the close of a cold snowy day could have been taken in any era in a Canadian winter. This is a very hopeful sign, though, since the invention of video games to tempt them indoors. :)

  13. You have portrayed well a piece of Canadian culture...although I do recall playing hockey on homemade rinks in Minnesota in my youth. What I remember most is how cold it was!

  17. Dad used to flood part of the back yard for us when we were kids in BC's Okanagan Valley. He'd put in goal posts and red and blue lines, and I'd play hockey with my brother and his friends.
Lots of memories in these photos. Thanks!

  21. And HOORAY for those kids!! That's the way it was here, once upon a time!! I raised my family in Montana and this was what my kids did during the winter! Not much in the way of video games etc. back then! Great shots as always, EG! Have a lovely week!

  23. That reminds me of back home in Idaho when the firemen put water on their yard so we could have an ice skating rink. Those were the days!

  24. Beautiful photos, I like the first one, especially.
The only ice for skating we ever see is in a rink indoors!

  29. Wonderful, EG. This is the way I envision Canada in the winter. With a future Sidney Crosby shooting pucks until he can't see them any more.
