Metallic Heron/Our World

 Winged blue heron, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Ontario

This heron was created by local sculptor George Holancin. Making  sculptures from discarded metal scraps and machinery is Holancin's way of minimizing waste. He envisions birds and animals when he comes upon hay rakes and obsolete plows tangled in weeds and nestled in wooded areas.

Part of a fountain, the base and impeller are cast iron and original components of one of two drainage pumps that in 1928 drained the Holland Marsh (now rich farmland that lies in Bradford West Gwillimbury, King Township and East Gwillimbuty).

In 2006, this piece won Top Honours for Floral Display for that year's province-wide Communities in Bloom contest.

    There is a metal heron sculpture in Eustis, Florida. Unfortunately, it is not in the same league as this one. This one is beautiful and I like the way it appears to be taking off, spreading its wings!

    Great! I've seen some sculptures made of repurposed metal pieces but this one is more sophisticated than most.

    Amazing how metal parts can be made into such a wonderful bird likeness.

    From a "distance" it look like a real heron! Great capture by the artist of the feel of the heron about to fly. Love your shot with the garden below.

    George Holanchin is a most talented sculptor. That is a wonderful blue heron. Too bad it isn't in my back yard.

    I like your heron, Ms. E.G. It is so pretty and very majestic looking. I like to watch them here around our lake diving for a fish they just saw.

    Oh I really like this guy. How neat. I have/had a Heron made out of rebar and filled in with colored glass and bits of mirrors. Really striking and I put him in my pond and he was there for several years and one day was gone. I think he fell over but ya know he could of flown away. LOL MB
