 Brock Monument, Queenston Heights, Queesnston, Ontario

Q is for Queenston and QEW

Monday afternoon after a five-day stay in Upstate New York, my husband and I crossed the Queenston Bridge into Canada to connect with the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) to head towards home.

Queenston  is on the Canadian side of Niagara River and the spot where an important battle took place two centuries ago in 1812.

Brock was the British Major General at the Battle of Queenston Heights, mortally wounded during the fighting.  His likeness now stands atop a 185-foot limestone column erected in 1856. Inside the column, 235 steps on a spiral staircase lead to the platform under the statue where the view is said to be spectacular, but you'll have to take Parks Canada's word for that because I stayed on terra firma and...

    Are people actually allowed to go up the staircase? One at a time I suppose. The line must be long.

    235 steps? I'd definitely enjoy the view from where you were. Really like the photo of the Niagara River too, have never been to that part of the country.

    Isaac Brock was (and still is) a Canadian hero. Many Ontario cities and towns have a Brock Street or Brook Road that was named after him.

    I'll take the Park's word as well but my, the view is breathtaking even without needing to climb 200+ steps! The monument has such elegant and graceful lines, despite its size.

    That is a tall monument, he is far up there! :o and all the stairs you have to walk, I would like to walk there!

    Pretty, pretty view. I went with my parents so many years ago across the QEW and down to the US to Wisconsin. I still remember the gorgeous scenery.

    Old family legend makes me think I might be descended from him, but I can't prove my Brock line came from him. I really loved seeing this.

    You could grab 100 Americans randomly and ask them about the War of 1812. No more than two might be able to explain it remotely accurately. (I would be among the 98 who can't.) And none would know the name of Sir Isaac Brock. Would Canadians do better, or are the war and Brock casualties of too many other things to learn about?

    I am hoping to go to the re-enactment of the Battle of Queenston Heights and the Death of Brock at Thanksgiving weekend. Should be fun (though war should not be fun, should it?)

    I hadn't heard about the Brock monument before, but if your photos are any indication it looks like the view at the top would be worth climbing the stairs. I'm game...now just to get there!
