Mallards walking on water...frozen water
It's January and we do have ice here in central Ontario now, but these photos were taken the day before Christmas when the ice was still thin. These mallards seem to have been a bit confused, especially the male who kept slipping and sliding.

I think she had because she moved slowly and carefully but...
Not-so-cautious male
this guy kept sliding and eventually put his left foot through some very thin ice before he limped to some open water to swim.

The ice looks as thin as a sheet of cellophane where the male mallard seems to be trying to skate. :)

Well, those poor little duckies need to get their tails down to Florida asap! We do get cooler weather on occasion, but this week it's gonna be in the 80s every day except today!

They will figure it out pretty soon, just like drivers slip and slide the first time they encounter winter ice.

I don't know how they can stand to swim in ice water but it doesn't seem to bother them. We always get a large flock of ducks that stay here most of the winter and then are gone all summer. These are nice shots of ducks on ice.

ReplyDeleteA few years ago I was visiting my brother in Rapid City, SD. He took me to a city park with a frozen pond, and we laughed as we watched the ducks fly in and land most ungracefully!
the ducks were probably wondering what happened to heir world.:p the ice looks so think i'm surprised it didn't break from their weight.
