End of winter, or nearly the end
Largest square: Red-tailed hawk sitting atop a small tree. I have seen quite a few red tails this winter but this is the first one to graciously show it's gorgeous red tail and "eagle" eye without flying away. How they find yummy voles and moles even when the ground is covered in snow is beyond my comprehension!
Moving clockwise:
1. Snow bunting eating weed and grass seeds at the roadside. In April males will return to the high Arctic, the females about a month later.
2. Horned lark, another bird that eats weed seeds at the side of roads this time of year
3. Female cardinal hiding amongst the branches of a red osier dogwood
4. Melting snow refreezing into icicles
5. Melting snow beneath wild grass and red osier dogwood

These birds are having a good time even in this winter day.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot of the re-tailed. I took one of a red-shouldered hawk a few days ago, which tend to prevail in these parts, but nearly so sharp and so clear.
ReplyDeleteChyba prawie koniec zimy, bo jeszcze widać jej ostatki. Ptaki śliczne widziałas w tym czasie. Pozdrawiam.
ReplyDeleteI think almost the end of winter, because I have seen the last of. Beautiful birds you saw at the time. Yours.

Lovely collage.
ReplyDeleteOh, man, the shot of that hawk is simply perfection! He gave you a wonderful pose. Enjoyed all your shots, but I'm particularly partial to birds of prey for some reason.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant shot of the Red Tailed Hawk, I'm so envious EG.
ReplyDeletenice. i always love to see the snow buntings and horned larks on folks' blogs!
ReplyDeleteGreat hawk image. "What's for lunch?"
ReplyDeleteNice collection of bird pics. Spring is in the air here.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to know so much about the flora and fauna of your community. Is such knowledge a requisite of your job?
ReplyDeleteAnother fine collage!
What a lovely collection of photos. The female cardinal looks very stylish in the dogwood.
ReplyDeleteI have seen a lot of red tails downtown too. They are often circling over railway tracks where bunnies and their like live but I think they like to grab a pigeon or 2 also!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots - very nice collage. The hawk is stunning, a perfect shot to show off all its hawkishness, especially that piercing eye.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Yes, we are definitely at the change of seasons. Nice.

ReplyDeleteFantastic images. Love the little snow bunting and the hawk.
ReplyDeleteYou do such an impressive job of taking photos of these birds and identifying them. I am barely past the robin, no robin state of knowledge.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots especially of that red-tailed hawk! Your nature knowledge is amazing:)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful mosaic. I love the birds, especially the Snow Bunting and the Meadowlark. The Hawk are cool to see. Lovely images, have a great week!
ReplyDeleteGreat shots. I haven't seen as many hawks this winter as I usually do.
ReplyDeleteI love your photo of the hawk. They never sit still like that for me. One swooped right in front of me yesterday while I was driving down the road. He didn't even have the courtesy to let me know he was coming so I'd have time to pick up my camera!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful collage! I love the icicles.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous image of your hawk!
ReplyDeleteWe have snow buntings in migration time but I have only seen it ones. :( They are beautiful birds.
