Northern flicker (Colaptes auratus)
I was walking along an abandoned road looking for birds when this northern flicker suddenly flew up from the ground into this tree.
Foraging for insects
Although it's a member of the woodpecker family, they spend a lot of time on the ground.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic shot of such a pretty bird! I've never seen one around here.
ReplyDeleteOr they spend a lot of time trying to get suet out of our suet feeders. We let them and they look so big as they almost wrap themselves around the feeder. They do love the apples in the fall though and then we don't like them as much. LOL MB
ReplyDeleteHe is such a beauty! I'd love to see one some day. :)
ReplyDeleteI love your shot, we have northern flickers here in the spring. I love watching them "flit" from spot to spot.
