Northern Flicker/Birding

Northern flicker (Colaptes auratus)

I was walking along an abandoned road  looking for birds when this northern flicker suddenly flew up from the ground into this tree.

Foraging for insects

Although it's a member of the woodpecker family, they spend a lot of time on the ground.

  3. He/she sure is beautiful.

I saw one in my yard last year, but the color was much darker, and didn't see the front of this bird either.

  27. Or they spend a lot of time trying to get suet out of our suet feeders. We let them and they look so big as they almost wrap themselves around the feeder. They do love the apples in the fall though and then we don't like them as much. LOL MB
