Clever or silly?
When I first saw this Canada goose sitting on this nest, I was sure she was a silly goose because...
Goose in tree
how did she think she was going to get her goslings to water? After all, baby ducks don't fly.
I happened to go back the next day, and it turns out this wasn't a nest after all. It was merely a resting place out of reach of possible predators. In fact, she could very well be a he.
So who was sillier: the goose or me?

That's cute. They usually nest on the ground.
ReplyDeleteA very interesting spot to stop for a break --- yea, probably a fella! LOL!
ReplyDeleteohmygod...I think this little one is very clever! And you have clever eyes, great shots!

That is so cute! I never knew a goose would rest in a tree like that!
ReplyDeleteShe IS a silly goose! Now I understand that expression! What a great catch for a photo.
ReplyDeleteCOOL a very wise bird indeed. B
ReplyDeleteFunny! I wonder where the saying "Silly Goose" comes from. Maybe just such a picture.

What a great perch! Not only safe from predators - but makes a nice place to pose for a photo, too. :)
ReplyDeletenow that's cool!!
ReplyDeleteGreat photo. Not sure how you managed to get so close to this goose. Long lens?
ReplyDeleteIt was quite clever of you to capture this rare shot and wise of the bird to hideout where it would be safe. :)
ReplyDeleteSmart bird for sure!
ReplyDeleteGreat capture! And, actually Can Geese and even mallards will still nest in trees and on building tops :-)
ReplyDeleteI work at one of the nation's busiest wildlife hospitals and we get DOZENS of calls every spring about geese and mallards nesting in trees and rooftops. People are used to seeing Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers do this, but not other waterfowl.
The babies bounce amazingly well...
I'd keep watching - that just may turn into a nest! (keep us updated) :-)
What a funny picture. Canadian geese are often goofy, er, goosey, but this takes the cake. I'd guess you're right, though - it's safer up there. More or less.
ReplyDeleteGeese are so fun to watch! I definitely say this a female.
ReplyDeleteA highrise goose rest!
ReplyDeleteWhether she/he is silly or clever it's a great resting place. Great capture!
ReplyDeleteha, ha. That would make a good nest except for the small problem of getting the babies out ot it!
ReplyDeleteI would've assumed the same as you! I've never seen a goose resting place quite like this, nice eye and captures!
ReplyDeleteI guess he/she found itself a comfy chair!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! It made me smile, as your posts usually do!
ReplyDeleteHa ha pretty funny, EG. The goose as it turns out is very smart. Cool picture too. MB
ReplyDeleteIt makes for a nice picture.
ReplyDeleteThings aren't always what they seem, I guess. I would have thought the same as you. Don't think I've ever seen a goose that high up in a tree. Nice shots.
ReplyDeleteNice photo of one impossible-seeming thing.
ReplyDeleteShe was recycling for Earth Day.
ReplyDeleteSilly Goose - I think it is one of those geese that mess with bloggers.
ReplyDeleteWell, she's got a birds eye view.
ReplyDeleteThat's a neat shot!! I've never seen a goose in a tree. He looks pretty comfy up there. :)
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter, it is a good shot of the goose in the dead tree.
ReplyDeleteLOL .. that is so funny!
ReplyDeleteThat is a wonderful and funny photo! Imagine seeing a goose in a tree! I'm glad it wasn't the actual nest.
ReplyDeleteI likely would have thought the same thing... But wood ducks nest in trees, and the babies just fall out...
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of the goose in the tree. Found a safe place to rest.
ReplyDeleteSo cosy and lovely where she/he is located in the tree. I would not be able to see if it's a she or he either.. how lovely the canada goose is, we have them here in my place too. and that old tree is also beautiful! =)
ReplyDeleteWow!!!! Interesting choice of nest.
ReplyDeleteYou never know, it could go back and lay eggs there! (My boss had a cat that had her kittens up in a tree....farther up than this, too!)
