Greater Yellowlegs/Wild Bird

 Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca)

On a stopover on its way south from the Arctic, this Greater Yellowlegs waded back and forth through the shallow water of a small pond. Graceful? Not very.  The Yellowlegs ran jerkily a few steps, then stopped, ran a few more steps, stopped and turned around. Repeat. It was hunting small aquatic invertebrates but would also have been delighted to find a small fish or frog.

Another view

Yellowlegs - both the Lesser and the Greater - are fairly common here during their migration north and south. A few Greater Yellowlegs may linger here well into autumn as long as they can still find  food.

  20. Love the lighting in these. I always thought "greater" was so misleading - they're such a dainty bird and your images show its beautiful markings so well.
