Bulk freighter Three Rivers
On a windy but sunny Saturday in mid November, my husband and I were out looking for water birds. In the harbour at Oshawa we found no birds but did find this huge bulk carrier, sometimes known as a bulk freighter or bulker.
Close up of back end
A bulker is a merchant ship that carries unpackaged cargo such as ore, coal cement, grains, or...
Mountain of salt
salt. Yep, this is the stuff used to melt ice on our winter roads. I'm sure I have never before seen such a mountain of salt.

Wow! I am amazed at the sheer size of both the freighter and the mountain of salt!!!
ReplyDeleteI betcha there's a lot of that being spread around the U.S. today. :-)
ReplyDeleteWith the lack of birds you still managed to get to get some excellent photos. There's plans to build a ethanal plant somewhere on the harbour. That's got a lot of people ticked off.
ReplyDeleteHI EG That is a massive boat and salt pile! Great shots.
ReplyDeleteNice photos!
ReplyDeleteYour photos remind me of the harbor in Duluth, MN that we often visit. It's cold in the winter, but delightful in the summer and tourist flock to watch the boats navigate the area. Fun to watch all the foreign carriers.
ReplyDeleteI have never, ever seen a mountain of salt. Too cool!!!
ReplyDeletethis is to cool for words. we have no need for salt here, so this is something i would never see. we do have the freighters, but ours are rusty, really rusty. this one looks new, the ship i mean...
ReplyDeleteThe dump trucks looks like toys next to the massive salt stack.
ReplyDeletevery cool! thanks for sharing that behemoth!
ReplyDeleteGreat shots! I like to sit at the harbour and watch the ships.
ReplyDeleteThat is something very interesting. I hadn't known how the salt was brought in to the cities other than by truck.
ReplyDeleteWow - that's a huge salt pile!
ReplyDeleteIt might not be a bird, but you got some great photos!
ReplyDeleteWow - I guess that's another sign that winter is on its way!
ReplyDeleteThat's a very impressive mound of salt!
ReplyDeleteSeeing those vehicles dwarfed by that mound really speaks to the scale!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is some salt mountain. The vehicles look like kids toys next to it.
ReplyDeleteImpressive vessel. And I'm always amazed at how white salt is! :-)
ReplyDeleteThose ships are massive.I find them interesting since we obviously don't see that on the prairies.
ReplyDeletewow where did that salt come from and how did they transport it?
ReplyDeleteWOW! What great shots, EG! That is a LOT of salt!! Amazing!! I thought I had seen a lot of different ships when I lived in Seattle, but never one like this!! Great post!! Hope you have a wonderful week! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThat freighter is huge! Interesting cargo also.
ReplyDeleteThese came into Portsmouth harbor when I lived in NH...and we used that salt for our roads also.
ReplyDeleteBig aren't they?? Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River.
ReplyDeleteThose ships are huge! The salt is important for the winter roads. Have a great evening and week ahead!
ReplyDeleteAmazing size and the amount it can carry
ReplyDeleteIsn't that interesting! Can you imagine working and living on that ship! And wow that is a lot of salt. We saw a mountain of sugar once down near the Salton Sea in California (and people were going to eat that!).
ReplyDeleteWow ~ Quite the large freighter ~ excellent photography ~ thanks, carol, xxx
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
ReplyDeleteQuite a pile of salt!
ReplyDeleteExcellent shots!
Great shots of the bulk freighter and the mountain of salt is incredible.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how big they are.

It's always interesting to watch the freighters. They play an important role in moving things around. Hope you won't need all that salt this winter though! :)
ReplyDeleteA busy day at this port, the ship is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLéia
That ship looks HUGE - Super Enormous.
ReplyDeleteStill, Once it's out at sea, I bet it's dwarfed . . . Nope, i don't think that would be a life for me.
It's most excellent to learn about it, though.
THANKS!!!
Very interesting...I would love to live where I could watch ships like this.
