Bulk Freighter, Oshawa Harbour

 Bulk freighter Three Rivers

On a windy but sunny Saturday in mid November, my husband and I were out looking for water birds. In the harbour at Oshawa we found no birds but did find this huge bulk carrier, sometimes known as a bulk freighter or bulker.

A bulker is a merchant ship that carries unpackaged cargo such as ore, coal cement, grains, or...

 Mountain of salt

salt.  Yep, this is the stuff used to melt ice on our winter roads. I'm sure I have never before seen such a mountain of salt.

  3. With the lack of birds you still managed to get to get some excellent photos. There's plans to build a ethanal plant somewhere on the harbour. That's got a lot of people ticked off.

  5. Your photos remind me of the harbor in Duluth, MN that we often visit. It's cold in the winter, but delightful in the summer and tourist flock to watch the boats navigate the area. Fun to watch all the foreign carriers.

  11. That is something very interesting. I hadn't known how the salt was brought in to the cities other than by truck.

Still, Once it's out at sea, I bet it's dwarfed . . . Nope, i don't think that would be a life for me.

It's most excellent to learn about it, though.
