Blue Skies

Two robins, part of flock of approximately 20

I'd tell you the robins are back so it must be spring...except I don't think they ever left. I read an article recently that said many robins spend the winter in woodsy areas where they have discovered berries and other food to sustain them throughout the season. If we see them, they have probably run out of food. This flock was at the side of the road kicking up leaves and scratching in the dirt looking for something tasty. When these two saw me they decided to "hide" amongst some weeds.

 Dressed for the weather

This is definitely not shorts and sandals weather! The trick to enjoying winter - at least for me - is wearing warm clothes: mittens, boots, coat, layers, scarf, hat....

  2. All of your photos depict winter in a different way, and the season doesn't really look that bad as viewed through your lens.

  3. it does look deceiving those photos, as it was bloody bitter cold still this weekend when you were out of the sun and in the wind.

  6. The robins stand out so nicely against the snow. I'm not sure I could pile on enough clothes to want to go out in that weather. Brrrr.

  8. i do believe the robins habits have changed. they always left the shore for winter and when i saw them again, i knew spring was not far behind. the last few years, i see them very early, as many as a 100 in the yard, often in february. then i don't see them for a week and then they are here again.

your image of them is beautiful and i adore the barn/farm!!!

  9. Very pretty colours!

I don't seem to recall if robins would be inclined to go for suet or birdseed.

  17. I love your picture of the robins. I have never seen them puffed up this big! Your info is very interesting! It may explain why ours always come back way too early in the snow and ice. Maybe they have been in a nearby woods? Bloggers are a wealth of helpful info! Your barn in the snow is beautiful.

  21. The dog needs some booties to complete its ensemble.

  22. We have a robin that visits our feeders during the winter, so we're pretty sure he's a year-round resident. That being said, I'm still ready for Spring.

  23. Well, I just know that spring is around the corner, although they say we're headed for a big dump of a lot of snow about rush time home tonight, and by morning's rush hour it'll really be brutal. But, spring is truly just around the corner!

  24. Your winter is much more spectacular and interesting than ours...

  25. We don't have robins here at our house...but they stay at Sarah's. Also, have seen then out in the woods not far from here.

Definitely not shorts and sandal weather...

  26. Your tactics seem to be sound, but don't forget that spring is just around the corner:-)

  27. We have robins that overwinter here - and some that migrate. I love it when they begin singing their cheery spring song.

  28. My wanderings around the city are by foot so I haven't been out for long for weeks! Yesterday I was out for 2 hours and it felt great so let's hope those robins get a break soon and find lots to eat!

  29. I love the lighting in the first shot as well as the grasses hiding the robins.

  30. Love the top shot. And blue skies too! :-)

  31. I don't know about North American Robins, but English Robins stay put all winter long! We see them all year round here and they are not migrators. xx

  33. Hi Tina,
Happy Monday and your photos are chilly, but lovely :)
Particularly loved the dogo with winter gear on! Very thoughtful of the owner. I tried putting boots on Shaggy, back in Saint Louis, and he walked like a Clydesdale - no bueno :)

    Have a Beautiful Day!
    Peace :)

  38. I didn't know robins would spend the winter that far north. I noticed that our redwing blackbirds have stayed around this winter. Maybe because the weather has been so mild.

  40. I haven't seen a robin around here since last spring. They don't stay here long from some reason....probably because it gets hotter than the hinges of hades in August :)

  41. I'd like to think that the robins are making their way back too but I've read of many sightings of them in NB all winter long. I've also heard that a few red winged blackbirds are being spotted the past few days. I can't imagine they'd return here yet as there is no ground showing anywhere in the NB or PEI or parts of NS yet. Beautiful photos. The barns are a nice shot.

  42. I've seen Robins in the middle of the winter here too. I don't think they ever go too far.

  43. The gull-decorated fence and that beautiful barn are great! Interesting to learn that about the robins. I had no idea they are sticking around in some areas.

  44. That's one well-bundled Greyhound! (Yours, perhaps?) :-)

I noticed a robin desperately trying to latch onto our suet feeder yesterday, but he was too large, apparently. (The Starlings manage, however.)

Loved each one of your images - they do look cold, but you also have blue skies. (Something we've not seen much of this winter.)

  45. You fully conveyed to us the cold. That last one looks so deserted, but it is so beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Looks like that dog is well equipped for the weather. I bet the robins are hoping and praying spring comes soon though.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Robins stick around here too, but surely spring will be coming soon....

    ReplyDelete
  48. We too have a flock of robins that hangs around eating berries from the woods behind our home and in the bushes in our yard. It surprised me the first time I noticed them last winter, barely recognized them as robins as they ware quite a bit larger with their winter layers on.

  49. I haven't seen a robin yet...how exciting... still snowy and cold here too... Michelle
