1. Spring Equinox 2015 happens today - 6:45 EDT. So now it's official: spring in the Northern Hemisphere. FYI: I'm not putting away my winter duds quite yet and I still have gloves stuffed in my coat pockets.
2. Or does spring actually begin today? Not according to most meteorologists! They say North American spring started on March 1st. To them the three warmest months are called summer, the three coldest are winter and those in between are spring (here March 1 to May 31) and autumn (here September 1 to November 30). Meanwhile since March 1st in Australia and New Zealand, it has been autumn.

5. It's maple syrup season here north of Toronto, when daytime highs are above freezing but the nights are still below. Sweet, don't you think?

ReplyDeleteOnly in Canada could people be thinking of Spring when there's still snow on the ground and ice on the water. Meteorologists only divide up the year in this way so that they can quickly and easily work out seasonal variations by simply totting up their monthly figures.

I think Spring is taking it's sweet time arriving this year. Seen lots of pails hanging from trees collecting the maple sap.

i feel the same way about a calendar telling us when spring begins as i do telling us when to change our clocks to another time... we know spring is here when we see the signs, and it looks like you are seeing some signs up there..

ReplyDeleteA farm down the road is tapping their maple trees too...love maple season but oh it is cold. Nature is showing signs of spring with the red winged blackbirds and deer whose coat is changing already...but the weather is definitely late Feb weather.

But I do miss the snowy winters we had in Montana during the years that we lived there. These days I can totally enjoy the snow through your beautiful and amazing captures!! I don't think the North American version of spring starting Mar. 1 works for most of us, especially this year on the east coast. Haha. It is a lovely day here though but NS and parts of NB are in for more snow tomorrow into Sunday. I like your icy pictures and I'm sure you'll get a few more before the snow and ice are gone. Our maple syrup season is very slow this year as we haven't had the above freezing daytime temperatures yet. :( Enjoy your spring weekend.

ReplyDeleteI bought a pair of gloves in the USA that have special fingertips that allow you to use touch screens. They work very well with my camera. Let me know if you'd like to know the manufacturer!

ReplyDeleteI remember when I lived in Montreal, every spring we'd go to a Sugaring Off party. The best part was pouring maple syrup on everything that was on the plate. Yum! And the hot syrup poured on snow to made taffee. Lovely images! Hopefully the weather will get warmer for you and not having to wear gloves anymore.
