Winter Surfer/ Watery Wednesday

Surfing Lake Ontario's waves, Hamilton, December 27

The temperature was below freezing but the wetsuit apparently kept this surfer feeling toasty.

Waves...but nothing as huge as those seen at Ocean Beach, California

Hey, Californians! Don't laugh!! These are pretty big waves for Lake Ontario. :)

We watched a couple of surfers along the Oregon coast last week. Good thing they have dry suits!

Yikes! You'd have to be awfully dedicated to do that, even with the wetsuit. Better him than me...

Your little aside about OB, made me laugh out loud. These are great captures and he's one tough dude. Bob used to do triathlons, and I can attest that wet suits are great insulators.

It's only my opinion--but I think he's nuts.

I doubt he was "toasty" even with the wetsuit. He's certainly courageous!

All the best to you and yours in 2011. May your year be filled with joy and love.

He looks gorgeous!

Wetsuit or not, I don't think I would go surfing in those temperatures.

oh that would be cold. Some people in Scotland jump into the sea, naked (or almost so) on New Years Day! Really!

You have confirmed for me once again that some people are just plain nuts!

I guess it takes all kinds. And the nuts can be fun to watch and take photos of!

Brrrrr!

The thought of surfing on a lake never occurred to me. I bet it's really cold but fun to watch.

out here in norcal, they have to wear the suit all year round.

homaygad! I won't dare...I'm already having second thoughts skating on a frozen lake but I'd surely turn away from surfing with water that cold! Great shots btw

Maybe when I was a lot younger. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River.

I'm not laughing -- it's a lot colder than CA, wet suit or no. Very nice picture.

Great shots, I'll bet he didn't have to fight the crowds to ride his board. I never thought about waves on lakes before.

Brave, but foolish, surfer (my humble opinion!).

Interesting! I understand his mentality tho -- I would play in the snow even if it was a blizzard. . .

Nice composition. I can't even begin to think about how cold it must be.

thinking of the icy water makes me shiver. You didn't go and swim on 31 dec?

Even here, it is warm, I don't swi.

Randy said...

I wonder if that suit really does keep them warm or if they just love the sport so much they just don't care about the cold. Nice shots.

i admire the surfer's dedication!:p

So often the big waves are in bad weather...even cold! Here it's before a storm or hurricane.

Too cold for me! Great photos though.

I guess you take your waves where you find them.
