 Ferry on Lake Simcoe

This is the ferry that runs from Virginia Beach (Ontario) to Georgina Island, the largest island in Lake Simcoe and a Chippewa First Nation reserve.

Keeping the channel clear of ice

Some years the ferry stops running during the winter months, but this year the ice wasn't very thick until a couple of days ago when the temperature dipped to -30°C. Until the ferry is running again, island residents can cross the lake in an air taxi.

Floridian feeling really cold right now

Those are pretty big chunks of ice! I would be afraid the digger would slip down the ice mountain!

Cool. I didn't know about this island/reserve.

MadSnapper said...

that mountain of snow thing looks dangerous to me, as in that digger machine rolling down the side of it.. brrrr the lowest temp i have ever been in is 16 above, never anything negative..

I know my vessels, but this is a really special ferry!

Hi Darla,
It's 6.6 kilometres from Virginia Beach to the docks on the island and takes approximately 35 minutes.

Should be a difficult work cleaning the harbor for ferry connecting the island. Excellent capture on the progress

Looks like the ferryboat copes well with the ice. Interesting, if chilly looking, post.

Nice series of photos Tina. I enjoy ferry rides but only in the summer when it's a nice day. :)

That's a lot of chunky ice. It sure looks cold.

What fun photos... I never knew they pulled chunks of ice out of the water with big machines like that. I thought they just used those for dirt lol

All these ice! Impressive!

Fab fotos, but I sure wouldn't want to live with that kind of weather. We lived in Ottawa for a few years and we were relieved to return to the rainy we(s)t coast!

That's a lot of work. We got the deep cold, and now we're getting more snow.

Revrunner said...

I imagine that's a pretty challenging port to keep clear.

-30C is never much fun. Nice snaps of the cold weather.

WOW! That's a lot of thick ice and snow to remove from the channel! I think I would stay in until it thawed...I don't "do" boats...kayaks, yes...boats...NOPE!...:)JP

I don't mind that I don't have that to deal with...but would still love to live near...

The ferry doesn't take many vehicles. Must have to take frequent trips.

Very interesting and great photos! It all looks like winter. I guess I really am a warm climate person, because that looks too darn cold.
