Red-bellied Woodpecker/ Wild Bird

Red-bellied woodpecker (Melaneries carolinus) on a fence post

Although red-bellied woodpeckers are common in the eastern U.S, I live just north of its range and so was very pleased to find a friendly one on the north shore of Lake Ontario.

 Red-bellied woodpecker on a tree

This guy was wedging seeds and nuts underneath tree bark. I'm guessing it was saving treats to eat during the winter. Red-bellied woodpeckers also hide food in fences, which is exactly what it may have been doing in the first photo.

  7. Great shots they can sometimes be skittish!! Last fall we had a red-bellied take sunflower seeds from our feeder, one at a time. He spent the entire day fetching seeds and hiding them. This went on from sun up to sun down, day after day!!!

  23. Why do y'all call red-headed woodpeckers red-bellied woodpeckers? Seems very strange. Cute though. But they can make a mess of trees!

We had lots of red-headed woodpeckers in south Florida. Well, I thought that's what they were. Now I'm not so sure. Thanks a lot! :-)
