Nature Notes

Mid February

This week was a combination of freeze and thaws, rain and snow. In the largest square you can see water in the bay, icicles on the rocks and snow on the ground.

Moving clockwise: bark peeling naturally on a birch tree, birch bark on snow below the tree, snow on spruce, snow on Echinacea seed heads, and fern parts (I don't know what they are called).

  12. Winter is hauntingly beautiful at times, but I'm still glad I don't live in the snow.

The one time I did, I couldn't drive anywhere without scaring myself to death!

  19. Yes the weather has been a roller coaster..I would like to just move into spring.. I wanted to tell you that the upside-down thistle feeder will only deter other thistle seed lovers like house finch..I am not sure if the red-polls or siskins can hang that way... Michelle
