Female happy with her zebra mussels
Last Tuesday I showed you photos of a male white-winged scoter that I saw swimming in the canal between Hamilton and Burlington. On Wednesday I spotted this femal in Whitby Harbour. They look quite different from each other, don't they?
Washing zebra mussels
I'm not sure why she kept dipping the mussels in water. Perhaps she was washing off some sand that came up with the mussels

She is wonderful and she has a gourmet appetite! ;) Happy Critter Day!
ReplyDeleteCool capture. Yes she is much different looking as the females in the birds species usually are. MB
ReplyDeleteBTW: On my fay4plus blog could you ID the Hawk for me? Please MB
That is a gorgeous shot. And so neat that she washes her food first!
ReplyDeleteNow how does she get the mussel out from the shell?
ReplyDeleteGreat closeups! She really does look different than the male.
ReplyDeleteA very tasty breakfast!
ReplyDeleteWonderful views of the cool bird.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a scooter, or any bird for that matter, washing off their dinner! That is really cool!
ReplyDeleteShe has a good dinner there for herself!
ReplyDeleteBon appétit ! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great capture, she is a beauty. I've never seen one washing it's food before.
ReplyDeleteGreat closeups of the Scoter! It is a neat sea ducks! Thank you for linking up to my Saturday's Critter party. Have a happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome capturing the bird with the mussels in its beak. Wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize any ducks ate the zebra mussels. They would be beneficial on the beach near us that is loaded with them.
ReplyDeleteYes, the female and the male don't look like they are related!
ReplyDeleteShe must have been picking up dinner on the way home.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good observation.
ReplyDeleteGreat captures.
Yum yum!
ReplyDeleteI always think its so unfair that the males are so much more colourful EG :)
ReplyDeleteGood girl, eating those mussels...
ReplyDeleteThey are all along the shorelines in nearby lakes. Terrible to walk on.
I would never have guess that she was the female version! Wish they would catch ALL the zebra mussels.
ReplyDeleteSurprised to learn ducks eat zebra mussels. Didn't know they ate meat in any form. Zebra mussels are an ecological disaster as they move into lakes and streams in the U. S. Midwest. Glad the ducks eat them.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous captured! Wonderful photos!
ReplyDeleteMy geese and ducks like to play in the water with their food too. She's very pretty.
