Northern Pintail

Male Northern Pintail (Anas Acuta)

A few ducks have begun to arrive at a favourite marsh just north of Lake Ontario.  Among those stopping over for a brief rest on their way south are Northern Pintails and this fellow was kind enough to swim close enough for some decent photos.

Swimming in amongst dead marsh plants

I waited for this one to stretch his long graceful neck but whenever he did he was behind dead and dying cattails and weeds. He's handsome now but not as elegant looking as he will be next spring when attracting females. But wait!

Female Northern Pintail

It seems the Northern Pintail males visiting this marsh already have a female following.

  1. Snap! You also have a Pintail today however you shots are fantastic. My Pintails were quite a distance away although I am not complaining as I saw more Pintails this year than ever before in one place so that is good news.

  4. Such elegant ducks. They overwinter here (if you know where to look) though many people will not have seen them.

  9. I guess you know your Pintails. I would have to take them from the water, turn them upside down and check.

  11. Going south, you say? I'll have to keep my eye out for them. I wonder if there's a game called "Pin the Tail on the Duck?"

I'm guessing you're happy with the election, yes?

  21. Awesome! Finally, someone is posting good pictures of a pintail. There are some ducks at the duck pond, and they look a bit pin tailed, but I have not been able to make a good I.D. I am comparing my pictures to this now. Do the males always have the black head and bill?
