Pine cone still attached to its tree
P is for PINE.
I'm pretty sire this pine cone comes from a red pine tree as there's a large stand of red pines in the forest where I took this photo.
Pine cone bird feeder
Last month, kids in a local garden group made pine cone bird feeders. These are huge cones from the southern U.S. The kids mixed various seeds with suet and then packed the mixture into the crevices of pine cones. Then they tied sisal string onto the cones so they could hang the feeders from branches. I've heard the kids really LOVED this project!
Pine needles coated with ice
This is a photo from LAST winter. So far this year we've had lots of snow but no freezing rain in my "neck of the woods."
I am linking to Jenny Matlock at Alphabe-Thursday HERE
I like the bird feeder!

ReplyDeletewhat a super project to do with the kids

I collected a bag of those huge pinecones last time I was in S Carolina. They are massive! I love the idea of using them as bird feeders. Unfortunately my big pinecones got thrown out a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteI did this project with the kidling one winter long ago, and made a huge mistake: we hung it on a branch outside my bedroom window. Talk about noisy! (But the birds loved it.)
ReplyDeleteAh, the pine in all its splendor and uses and disguises.
ReplyDeleteThat pine cone feeder looks like a gourmet meal for the feathered critters.
ReplyDeleteI really like the pine cone feeder, that's a great idea and the photo of the icy pine needles is gorgeous. Lovely post! - Tasha
ReplyDeleteBeautiful capture! We had freezing rain early on, but since then it's been snow, snow, and more snow.
ReplyDeleteThe pine cone feeder would be fun to make - kid or not.

The first and last shot are superb and I love the cone feeder.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Here in Arkansas we actually don't want pines near our homes as they topple easily in tornadoes. But, I love them. They have such wonderful texture and I love the green all winter!
ReplyDeleteHi EG CG -- I have been accused of overusing the word "awesome" but I think it is absolutely perfect for that first photo. How many pine cones have I seen? Hundreds? Thousands? I don't know, but you make that one in the photo look better than the others. Nice work! John
ReplyDeletegreat idea to use those giant pinecone for something good for the birds and squirrels and even better for the kids that made them.. love that first shot
ReplyDeleteI love the pine cone feeder idea. It's an all natural treat for our feathered friends.
ReplyDeletevery cool pine cone feeder. i wish we had a big pine or two on our property, but i only see a few on the way to town. but i'm happy for my oaks. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's one big pine cone! Nice shot of the icy pine needles.
ReplyDeleteNeat idea with the pine cone. Seems you and Rose were channeling each other with your photo for the day.
ReplyDeletePine cones are just so versatile!
ReplyDeleteLovely as usual!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great, clever bird feeder!! I love it!! Beautiful pics for the day as always! The ice coated pine needles are awesome!! Hope your week is going well!! Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteThat is one beautiful pine cone! We've used the pine cone bird feeder in our VBS with the little kids. They love making those, although our pine cones are much smaller. It would be fun to get some of the huge ones!
ReplyDeletei have done that pinecone project with peanut butter and my squirrels just loved it * sigh *
ReplyDeletethe ice image is gorgeous!!!!
Beautiful cone. Like all your pictures.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot of the pine cone on a tree!
ReplyDeleteWhat great pics and I am sure the kids really enjoyed this project and learned a lot.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by while I've been away. Wishing you a great rest of the week.
Hugs, CM
I didn't know that you can use pine cones as bird feeders. Is it a personal idea or something that is well known or even sold in shops ?
ReplyDeleteWonderful set of pictures. I used to make my own pine cone bird feeders. The birds loved them. It seemed like they could be in more natural positions while feeding.
ReplyDeleteThe last picture wins for sheer beauty! But the first pine cone is so different! It is really beautiful. I would love to make this project, and we have lots of pine cones here, but only normal size, kind of big and long.
ReplyDeleteI've made that type of feeder with my Grands - fun and messy. Just right for a kid (and me).
ReplyDeleteThere is something magical about pine cones, no wonder the kids loved that project. We used to have a box of Sugarpine cones ... They're also huge ... We used them for Christmas decor for years after we gathered them.
ReplyDeleteI love the pine cone feeder idea. I'll bet the birds do also!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for the children
ReplyDeleteI love the pinecone suet ball!
ReplyDeleteThat first picture--I love it. I think that was a great project for the kids. It is a great project for us, too!
ReplyDeleteThe needles coated with ice are beautiful...and the pine cone feeder looks like a great idea!
ReplyDeleteLove the close up of the pine cone.
ReplyDeleteYou icicles are very pretty. But too many are hard on the trees because of their weight.
ReplyDelete..
Beautiful photos. You have such a keen eye.
ReplyDeleteI used to make those feeders with my first graders long, long ago
The pine cone bird feeder is a fab idea, great P post for A-T this week.
ReplyDeleteThat's a H U G E cone!
ReplyDeleteThe bird feeder is very creative. Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this delightful post and super photos.
Have a nice day.
What an excellent idea for a bird feeder EG, one that I may have to try.
ReplyDeleteI'm behind again..drats..I will catch up someday! The pine cone bird feeders are super--our cones are entirely too small for that, but what a great project for the kids! I don't like the ice on my pines- it makes the limbs bend almost to the ground and I fear they will snap. But oh so pretty! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteGreat bird feeder and wonderful photography ~
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend coming to you,
artmusedog and carol
Amazing images, love all of them.
ReplyDeleteA pinecone feeder is now on my list of things to do! Thanks for the idea.

Love your presentation...we have pines and I collect the pine cones. They usually end up as fireplace tinder♪
ReplyDeleteI love collecting pine cones to display in the house and around the garden. I've made the bird feeder cones with Brownies and with the grandkids ... great fun. Now a days you always have to check to see about peanut allergies before making with groups of kids.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures. So nice the kids took the time to do something nice for the wild birds.
