We've had cold nights and frost here, but this painted lady (Vanessa carduii) hasn't given up yet. I guess as long as the butterfly bushes close to the house still bloom, it'll carry on.
The inside of this butterfly's wings are very colourful. I spent quite a bit of time in summer trying to catch a painted lady with its wings open, but it would not cooperate. However, this one gave me ample opportunity to capture its beautiful colours. ;-)
But here you can see the outer wings are quite drab except for a touch of orange on the upper wing.

Fabulous Capture!!
We've been seeing a lot of these Painted ladies on our butterfly bushes, which are still blooming. Beautiful shot!
She's a beauty! Wonderful colurs on the wings on the inside but the outside is so dull... almost like Mother Nature ran out of paint!
You captured this Painted Lady so well. Beautiful!
Amazing! I've never seen one up close, so thank you!
Very pretty!!! Nice capture!
You still have butterflies at this time of year. Beautiful close up.
Wow! fantastic photos!
My goodness, these are just fabulous photos of the beautiful butterflys! Wow!!! Great post!!
Well, I am feeling a bit embarrassed now...back a month or two ago I thought I had actually captured a red admiral with its wings closed...I had for sure been chasing one. I posted it and called it a red admiral.. But looking at the one photo of yours I am almost positive it was a painted lady. Boy, do I feel dumb!
Coming here is always a visual treat. Today is no exception - these are excellent!
Such detail captured in the first one.
Very impressive.
Just lovely, EG.
Beautiful photos of the butterflies.
Impressive! Only "rain"- birds around here now :-(
I am somewhat like that too. Although the butterflies give me more than adequate wing opening and closing sequences, I am always hoping to capture one flat out open and seldom do. We do not have any butterflies here except cabbage whites and not many of them. Most all flowers are gone except one or two and those are not crowded. I guess the season of beauty is over.
How beautiful!Great capture.
She is beautiful, and your photos are really wonderful. I love the butterfly bush.
What a beauty!
I agree with your comment on your previous post about noticing more, it really makes a difference when one is keeping an eye out for images.
Wonderful details!
these are beautiful!! and thanks for visiting!
Wow great catch and that first shot on the purple flower is particularly eye catching.
Absolutely beautiful photos!
EG: What a great close-up of the Painted Lady. Those are outstanding photos.
superb!!
Beautiful shots of another species that I have been unable to capture. Well done.
Wow..I am surprised that it still survives..Nice catch....
This one is a beauty. Great pics.

A big WOW on the butterfly pictures!!
Your shot is a beauty for sure. :)
She's sporting fall colors!
That is a Great photo!
That first photo is one of my favorites ever! My favorite color of the flower, and I LOVE butterflies. That is GORGEOUS.
Wow, excellent shots!
I love Painted Ladies and how beautiful this one is. How fortune you are to have them still around; ours have disappeared ages ago. Happy Thanksgiving,
ann
