Surprise/ Photo Hunter

Thin ice in August?

True, this IS canada...BUT there's no ice on our central Ontario ponds this time of year. HONEST!
This week's Photo Hunter challenge: surprise

For Children/ Bench

Miniature version of common-style bench seen in this area

This photo was taken from the sidewalk on a rainy day. Notice the dry spot under the bench. The garden around this bench is so neat and tidy that I suspect this bench is for grandkids.

A few bloggers have informally joined RuneE at Visual Norway in featuring benches on their blogs on Fridays. To find out who else is playing,  click HERE.

Who Lives Here?/ Camera Critters

Who would build a nest on a light standard high above an athletic field in East Gwillimbury...

or on a telephone pole high above an East Gwillimbury railroad track?

An osprey, that's who!

Until a few days ago, I had never seen an osprey. Then a friend told me he knew where there were two nests a few minutes from his farm. Mama osprey is sitting on the nest (first photo) and Papa is is standing guard on a nearby light standard (third photo). The nest in the second photo appears to be empty.

Ripples/ Photo Hunter

Raindrops are falling on his head (can you hear the melody?)

This week's Photo Hunter challenge: ripples

As Jacob has pointed out, this photo was NOT taken in East Gwillimbury but at the Toronto Zoo. Good observation, Jacob!

Jackson's Point/ Sky Watch

Harbour at Jackson's Point, Ontario, on Lake Simcoe

Although the Canadian province of Ontario is not situated on the Atlantic or Pacific oceans, it is still a watery place. It has many lakes, rives, ponds, creeks, marshes.... In fact I live within easy drive of three of the Great Lakes (Ontario, Huron and Erie), each of which looks from the shore to be a fresh water sea.

Lake Simcoe, the lake I frequent most often, is a big lake - although it's not large enough to be one of the five Great Lakes. My camera finds it very photogenic so begs me often to go there.

Latch & Lock/ Macro Monday

Closeup of latch on inside door of St George's Anglican Church

Doesn't the latch appear to have been used many times over the past 130 years? Built in 1877, the year the railroad reached Jackson's Point, St. George's Anglican Church overlooks Lake Simcoe, a popular summer destination for Torontarians (people who live in Toronto).

Belted Kingfisher/ Camera Critters

Male belted kingfisher
This guy can turn his head around, can't he? No wonder I can never get up close to him!

Female and juvenile belted kingfisher

This bird family is skittish.  They takes off the minute they see me...even if I'm on the other side of the pond. I can't count the number of times I've tried to capture them with my camera!
